The Campus Life Safety Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for life safety, emergency preparedness, safety compliance, and risk-management activities supporting campus-life facilities, programs, events, and student services.A primary responsibility of the position is to support the university's implementation and operational compliance with the NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, as adopted and applied by the university and applicable authorities having jurisdiction.
The Manager works collaboratively with Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, University Police/Public Safety, Emergency Management, Residence Life, Risk Management, and other campus partners to identify life-safety concerns, coordinate corrective actions, improve emergency preparedness, and promote a safe environment for students, employees, and visitors.
The position serves as a campus-life subject-matter resource for life-safety practices and helps ensure that safety requirements are incorporated into daily operations, building use, student activities, and special events.
Responsibilities:
NFPA 101 & Life Safety
- Implement and maintain the Campus Life NFPA 101 Life Safety Program.
- Conduct and coordinate life-safety inspections of facilities, laboratories, student spaces, and event areas.
- Monitor means of egress, emergency exits, corridors, stairs, fire doors, exit signage, emergency lighting, and other life-safety features.
- Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions.
Compliance & Reporting
Maintain life-safety inspection, testing, PM, drill, and corrective-action records. Monitor overdue inspections and unresolved deficiencies and escalate significant concerns. Prepare periodic life-safety compliance reports for Campus Life leadership. Support inspections by Fire Marshal personnel, Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, and applicable authorities.
Laboratory Life Safety
Coordinate life-safety inspections and corrective actions in research and instructional laboratories. Identify concerns involving egress, fire protection equipment, combustible materials, emergency access, and laboratory emergency procedures. Coordinate technical laboratory and hazardous-material concerns with Environmental Health and Safety.
Life Safety Equipment
Maintain an inventory and schedule for required life-safety inspections, testing, certifications, and preventive maintenance. Schedule and coordinate inspections and PMs for fire alarms, sprinklers, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, exit signs, fire doors, emergency communication systems, and other applicable life-safety equipment. Track completion, deficiencies, repairs, retesting, and overdue activities. Maintain inspection reports, service records, certifications, and corrective-action documentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three years of experience in fire/life safety, safety management, facilities operations, emergency management, or a related field.
- Working knowledge ofNFPA 101, Life Safety Code and applicable fire/life-safety requirements.
- Experience conducting or coordinating life-safety inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance.
- Experience coordinating contractors, corrective actions, and compliance documentation.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge ofNFPA 101, Life Safety Code and applicable fire/life-safety requirements.
- Knowledge of life-safety systems, inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance.
- Ability to identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions.
- Ability to manage inspection and preventive-maintenance schedules.
- Knowledge of emergency evacuation, fire prevention, and life-safety practices.
- Ability to assess campus facilities and laboratories for life-safety concerns.
- Strong organizational, documentation, communication, and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to coordinate with Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, Fire Marshal, Public Safety, and contractors.
- Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment during emergencies.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license may be required.
This position is an essential function/employee position. Employees in this classification will be required to report to work or remain at work during inclement weather and/or other campus events or emergencies.
