Linfield University is seeking a skilled and dependable Utilities Maintenance Specialist – Boiler Plant / Fleet Services to join our Facilities & Auxiliary Services team.
This position plays an important role in maintaining the University’s essential infrastructure, including campus boiler systems, heating equipment, and fleet vehicles. We are looking for an individual with strong technical knowledge, troubleshooting abilities, and a commitment to safety and operational efficiency.

Job Summary
Responsible for the maintenance of the campus boiler plant and associated support equipment. Perform installation, inspection, and repair of boilers and pressure vessels, EMS, manual controls, and pumping systems. Perform daily operations of steam and hot water plants located on campus. This position functions with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Boiler (CHP) Responsibilities
- Perform general and preventive maintenance on boiler plant boilers, pumps, DA tank, water treatment, HVAC, and associated systems.
- Inspect and maintain water filtration and associated systems.
- Test the chemical balance of the boiler feed water systems. Work directly with the chemical supplier in monitoring water treatment.
- Evaluate the boiler and associated systems for serviceability and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Operate the boiler on a secondary fuel source.
- Clean boilers and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Ensure boilers are maintained to state code specifications and meet all safety requirements.
- Consider temperature, pressure, and code requirements when selecting the proper pipes, valves, and fittings.
- Periodically perform boiler efficiency testing.
- Ensure that all work orders are complete upon receipt and follow-up actions are taken on back-ordered items.
- Read and interpret blueprints.
- Respond to emergency problems by assessing the situation and implementing appropriate corrections.
- Constantly monitor for safety hazards or discrepancies with the boiler system and respond quickly to problems.
- Record, log, and maintain records and reports of work completed.
- Perform other general maintenance duties as may be needed within the Physical Plant.
- Inspect, repair, or replace tools and equipment used in the maintenance of boilers.
Fleet Services Responsibilities
- The primary function of Fleet Services is to diagnose, service, maintain, and repair University vehicles and Facilities Services equipment.
- Perform diagnostic work, general service, and preventive maintenance on all campus-owned vehicles and equipment, including fleet vehicles, trucks, carts, hydraulic lifts, mowers, spray equipment, etc.
- Demonstrate troubleshooting techniques and problem-solving skills, use appropriate test equipment, and apply sound maintenance knowledge.
- Respond to emergency system problems, assess the situation, and take appropriate action.
- Prioritize work and maintain communication with the supervisor regarding equipment and vehicle status.
- Ensure the work area is clean, well-organized, and free of hazards.
- Occasionally operate heavy equipment, movers, forklifts, hi-lifts, and carts.
- Maintain parts, supplies, and tools, and requisition items as needed with the supervisor’s approval.
- Assemble and install new equipment.
Supervision of Others
- Train and supervise student and temporary employees.
Knowledge and Experience
Education
- High school diploma or GED.
- Specialized training in boiler operations, pneumatic controls, and electronic controls.
- Boiler operator’s certificate required or can be obtained.
Experience
- Five years of boiler operator or equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of tools and the care and maintenance of trade tools.
- Knowledge of general building maintenance required.
- Working knowledge and experience with water and steam heating systems.
- Working knowledge of pumping systems, water treatment, and EMS control systems.
- Ability to train, motivate, and supervise employees.
- Overall knowledge of plant operations, procedures, and maintenance requirements.
- Thorough understanding of safety requirements, regulations, and compliance as related to boiler systems.
- Basic computer skills, including Word, Excel, or similar software.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Ability to obtain a Class III Building Mechanics license and asbestos license, if necessary.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state laws and codes that apply to boilers and pressure vessels.
Physical Requirements
Work is conducted indoors and outdoors with exposure to weather elements. At times, work will be performed in confined areas.
The position requires constant standing, walking, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying 100 pounds.
Frequent climbing of stairs and ladders up to 40 feet high and operation of a man lift up to 60 feet high are required. Frequent manual dexterity of hands and fingers is necessary.
The position involves exposure to electrical currents and occasional requirements to wear a respirator.
