Backend Software Engineer | Telia Play

We’re looking for a mid-level to senior Backend Software Engineer to join us at Telia Play.

I’mTomas Brimor,Engineering Manager at Telia Play, and I’m searching for someone ready to grow with us. We’re a small, supportive, forward-thinking backend team of around 6–8 engineers focused onbuilding and operating the metadata platform behind the viewing experience for nearly 2 million subscribers across the Nordics. We work extensively with AI-assisted development and are building agentic AI in production. These are agents that work with our real services and workflows, not just prototypes.

What you’ll do:

You’ll help decide how solutions are built, from design through production. Our platform assembles complete, accurate records from many partial sources and processes nearly half a million events daily, with peak days exceeding 2 million.

• Build and evolve ourmetadata platform, from ingestion and enrichment to APIs and near real-time distribution.
• Own solutionsend to end: understand the problem, shape the approach, implement, test, deploy, and keep improving them in production.
• Contribute totechnical decisions, balancing delivery, reliability, security, cost, and maintainability.
• Work across backend services and AWS infrastructure, including deployment pipelines, runtimes, and observability. We follow"you build it, you run it", with support from teammates and specialist cloud/DevOps colleagues. On-call is available for those who want it but isnot required.
• Buildagentic AI capabilities for our platform and workflows, and make them reliable, secure, and useful in practice.
• UseAI-assisted development throughout your work, applying your engineering judgment to validate the results and owning what you ship.
  

Our stack is mainly Kotlin (with some Java) and Spring Boot, with Python for our agentic AI work. We run on AWS with Terraform, SQL/NoSQL databases, SNS, SQS, and Kinesis. You don’t need experience with every part, but you should be comfortable learning beyond your immediate area of expertise. As you learn the platform, your scope and technical influence can grow across backend, cloud, and AI.

What will help you thrive in this role:

You enjoy taking solutions from idea to production, have an ownership mindset, and care how software behaves after deployment, including working with infrastructure, observability, and troubleshooting.

• Solid experience building and maintainingproduction backend systems, ideally in Kotlin or Java.
• A good understanding of APIs, databases,distributed systems, testing, and secure development, with sound judgment about when a straightforward solution is best.
• Anownership mindset: you care how software behaves after deployment and are happy to work with infrastructure, observability, and troubleshooting.
• Hands-on, critical use ofAI-assisted development, and an interest in connecting AI capabilities with real systems in production.
•  Fluency in English, with clear communication and a collaborative approach to discussing trade-offs, solving problems, and sharing knowledge

Experience with AWS, event-driven architectures, and infrastructure as code is a plus, as is experience integrating LLMs, building agents, or operating AI-enabled systems. You don’t need to be an AI specialist. You also don’t need to tick every box: we care about your engineering foundation, sound judgment, and ability to follow through, not an exact match against every technology.
