The Department of History and Social Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is seeking a full-time, tenure-trackAssistant Professor of Sociologywith an anticipated start date of August 2027. This is a nine-month,benefit-eligible position with a salary range of $58,000-$62,000 per academic year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Sociology program strives to educate students to have knowledge and appreciation of sociology, and to sustainably improve their understanding of themselves and the critical structures and forces affecting society.
Key Job Responsibilities:
We encourage applicants with teaching and research experience in sociology who can teach courses in Introduction to Sociology, Social Inequalities, and other electives related to the candidate's area of expertise. The area of expertise is open; however, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the areas of Rural/Urban Sociology & Rurality, Public Health Policy, or Environmental Sociology. A focus on an applied sociological approach and the ability to teach Social Research Methods are a plus. The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester (4/4), including introductory and upper-division sociology courses offered by the Department of History and Social Sciences. Applicants will also be expected to participate in scholarly activities (such as research, publishing, and presenting at conferences), and engage in service to the discipline, department, college, and the University. Additional teaching or other responsibilities may be available over the summer/winterim depending on program, college, or university needs and the interest of the selected candidate
Other responsibilities include:
- Employing evidence-informed pedagogy practices to teach and engage undergraduate students within and beyond the classroom.
- Collaborating with students and faculty on academic, research, and program-related activities.
- Academic advising.
- Contribute to curriculum development and assessment reports.
- Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD in sociology or closely related field earned by January 1, 2028.
- Advanced knowledge and skills related to sociology documented by a record of professional development, research, or publications.
- Minimum of one semester (4.5 months) experience teaching sociology at the undergraduate level.
- A record of research or a research agenda in the candidate’s area of interest within the discipline.
- Minimum of one semester (4.5 months) mentoring, advising, and/or leading undergraduate student organizations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
