SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of IT serves as the college’s primary Enterprise Architect and lead technical contributor. This position provides strategic governance and hands-on leadership for the institution’s enterprise software ecosystem, cloud infrastructure, and digital properties. The Assistant Director directs IT development, oversees the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), and API integrations, systems security, ADA compliance, and enterprise software agreements. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides strategic and technical leadership for the design, development, and integration of the College’s enterprise information systems, aligning solutions with institutional priorities and user needs.
  • Directs application security, access controls, and data-protection measures to minimize breach liability and institutional risk.
  • Designs, engineers, governs, and secures cloud-based and on-premises systems infrastructure, enterprise portals, web properties, Git version control, custom applications, and integrations.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains system integrations and APIs connecting enterprise platforms (e.g., SIS, CRM, LMS, and third-party systems).
  • Serves as lead developer and primary programmer for the Student Information System (SIS) and related enterprise applications.
  • Leads the software development lifecycle (SDLC) for applications, integrations, and automations, including design, development, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Establishes development priorities, project pipelines, and workflows; manages and delivers multiple concurrent IT projects.
  • Provides leadership, mentors and supervises staff; motivates and empowers staff to create environments that promote innovation; sets standards for delivering quality service and strategic programming in student and residence life.
  •  Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities. 
  • Oversees enterprise application environments, web infrastructure, and supporting tools (e.g., version control systems).
  • Ensures systems are reliable, accessible, and user-centered; supports compliance with ADA Title II and WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Manages vendor relationships and software agreements for enterprise systems, including coordination of renewals and services.
  • Develops and maintains standards, documentation, and procedures for systems, integrations, and data processes.
  • Serves as primary liaison between IT, campus departments, and external partners; translates business needs into technical solutions.
  • Provides training, guidance, and support to faculty and staff to promote effective use of systems and applications.
  • Participates in institutional planning, committees, and continuous improvement efforts; maintains current knowledge of industry trends and best practices.
  • Establishes long-range planning mechanisms; prepares periodic reports and represents the department; and maintains collaborative relationships with college departments.
  • Remains current in practices, trends, and research related to areas of assignment.
  • Attends related training, workshops, and professional development sessions.
  • Cross-trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.
  • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College.
  • Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to the Executive Director of Information Technology.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related field AND two years of progressively responsible enterprise development experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work experience in public or higher education.
  • Work experience with large, complex information systems.
  • Work experience with developing, maintaining, and documenting custom systems integrations.
  • Industry-recognized enterprise IT certifications
  • Work experience with full-stack web development, including WordPress.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and support enterprise-level applications and system integrations using multiple programming languages (e.g., C#, Python, Java, SQL, .NET frameworks, and others).
  • Knowledge of relational database design and administration of Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of reporting tools, including SSIS, Tableau, Google Data Studio, and PowerBI.
  • Knowledge of relational database design, administration, and reporting tools, including but not limited to Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS/SSRS, and Power BI.
  • Demonstrated expertise in full-stack web development, including content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and modern web technologies.
  • Knowledge of enterprise system architecture, APIs, and data integration across client-server and cloud-based platforms.
  • Ability to lead complex development projects and system implementations, including prioritization, execution, and delivery in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to analyze business and functional requirements and translate them into effective, user-centered technical solutions.
  • Advanced ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex application, system, and integration issues.
  • Knowledge of operating systems, development environments, and system configuration.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement through the evaluation and implementation of new technologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of software development standards, data management practices, and system documentation requirements.
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service and technical support to a diverse range of campus stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and within established policies and procedures in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability and willingness to represent the College in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed and respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance and successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • This position is classified as Medium Duty, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally and lesser amounts frequently or continuously, in accordance with U.S. Department of Labor guidelines.
