Job Summary:Â
The Certified Surgical Tech First Assist is a proficient level practitioner whoassists surgeons and nurses with patients, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures in the operating roomin accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. They will prepare the operating room for surgery by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment, and will obtain special suppliesindicated byphysician. They are also trained to set up andoperate a variety of specialized instrumentation,manual and powered equipment. Â

Essential Functions:Â
Functions as the scrub person and mayassist the provider as trained during operative and other invasive procedures by assembling supplies and equipmentrequired for the procedure. Â
 Prepares andorganizes sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure and performs surgical counts with the circulating RN according to policy. Â
Maintains an organized sterile field and ensures the sterility of the field by taking corrective action as needed.Assists with the placement of sterile drapes. Provides instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure andmaintains aseptic technique. Â
Retrieves and collects specimens and labels specimens appropriately and correctly. Â
Reports any implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to the circulator. Â
Provides complete case preparation and knows, with the ability to adapt, of special instruments, supplies, and equipmentneeds for patient populations. Â

Education:Â
Associate's degree, Vocational Certification, or Military Certificate in Surgical Technology (required)   Â
Â
RequiredLicensing & Certifications:Â
BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)  Â
Must be certified by one of the following: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) or Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (required) Â
If employed in South Carolina NBSTA certificationrequired.  If certified prior to2008 NBSTA or NCCT certification is accepted. Â

One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist (required) Â
