Overview:

The Archery Instructor is a Part-Time Position. We offer competitive compensation, PTO and an employee discount for part-time employees.

Job Purpose:

Archery Instructors are responsible for leading archery lessons and ensuring that they are positive, encouraging and fun for all youth and adults involved. Instructors are responsible for implementing and teaching archery curriculum, and adjusting it to meet the needs of the class.
 

Essential Function:

  • Actively lead lessons, balancing time between individual participants of different skill levels.
  • Evaluate participant skill and interest level throughout each session. Update curriculum for lessons based on these evaluations.
  • Make any necessary adjustments to instruction and drills to insure a safe and effective class.
  • Provide level specific instruction to participants based upon current Park District class.
  • Effectively break-down and demonstrate skills, constantly setting a good example for youth.
  • Directly supervise participants to ensure that they are on task, safe and enjoying their experience.
  • Arrive to class early to set up and be prepared to deliver a successful class.
  • Become familiar with participants and strive to create a community feel in class.
  • Sets and enforces disciplinary standards throughout program for participants.
  • Responsible for positive interaction with both parents and participants.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about daily activities and students' progress.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately. Contact and ask for assistance from Program Supervisor or other Park District staff when necessary.
  • Keep program supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe, and inform Program Supervisor of equipment that is broken or needs
  • Responsible for setting up equipment, with assistance. This includes, but is not limited to, target stands, targets, lane markers, quivers, bow rack, arrows, and backstop curtain.
  • Responsible for making sure range is set up to meet USA Archery safety standards.
  • Responsible for making sure all equipment is put away properly in a safe and orderly fashion.
  • Complete all paperwork as assigned including, but not limited to, attendance sheets and bow assignments.
  • Maintains a complete understanding of Park District emergency action plans and acts as a leader in the execution of the plans when required.
  • Prepares incident and accident reports and follow-up reports as needed.

 

Additional Functions:

  • Occasionally assist with events and programs.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel. 
  • Must maintain current industry certifications.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Work Experience Required:

  • At least 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED. Associate's Degree or above preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months of archery experience, on a recurve, compound, or longbow.
  • USA Archery Level 1 Instructor Certification or NASP Basic Archery Instructor certification.  
  • Must be willing to complete SafeSport Core Training and Athletes with Disabilities Training.
  • Ability to work with and instruct children, in groups as large as 10 students.
  • Ability to verbally communicate and physically demonstrate instructions and skills to students.
  • Certification in advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must have the ability to be firm with participants when necessary, enforce park district rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all participants, staff, facilities, and equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task workload.
  • Must be willing to travel to various locations throughout Oak Park and arrive in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read and understand printed material.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others.
  • Ability to interpret and explain division and District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively.
  • Frequent walking, running, standing, reaching, bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
