Overview

Role Purpose

The Sr Construction Project Engineer – MEP provides site-based project engineering support while contributing to the APAC CE&I regional support network. The role is grounded in electrical engineering and extends across mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, including interfaces with controls, life safety systems, construction delivery and commissioning.

The role supports project teams in resolving multidisciplinary engineering and commissioning issues, assessing compliance with approved design requirements and Microsoft standards and translating project experience into practical improvements through root cause analysis, lessons learnt and technical guidance.

Operating Context

The Sr Construction Project Engineer – MEP focused on assigned project and site delivery responsibilities while supporting regional activities when specialist input or coordinated MEP review is required. The role works collaboratively with project delivery teams, design and engineering stakeholders, commissioning teams, contractors, consultants and the APAC CE&I network. Matters requiring final design authority are escalated through the appropriate engineering governance pathway.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Delivery and Site Engineering

  • Provide practical engineering support throughout construction, testing, commissioning and project close-out.
  • Review MEP installation issues, technical queries, RFIs, submittals, design changes and field conditions.
  • Assess whether proposed solutions align with approved design documentation, specifications, safety requirements and project objectives.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces to identify gaps, clashes, sequencing constraints and system integration risks.
  • Support resolution of site issues without displacing the accountability of the responsible designer, contractor or project delivery team.
  • Monitor closure of assigned technical actions and verify that agreed outcomes are reflected in field execution and project records.

2. MEP Technical Assurance

  • Apply strong electrical engineering judgement while reviewing the wider MEP system and its interfaces.
  • Support technical reviews and project assessments across electrical, mechanical, plumbing, controls, fire and life safety systems as applicable.
  • Identify non-compliance, deviations, design gaps, scope gaps, constructability concerns and risks to operability or maintainability.
  • Provide clear, evidence-based recommendations and escalate issues requiring specialist or final engineering authority.
  • Promote consistent interpretation and implementation of approved requirements across APAC projects while recognising local regulatory obligations.

3. Commissioning Support

  • Support commissioning readiness reviews, system turnover, pre-functional checks, functional testing and integrated systems testing activities.
  • Investigate commissioning failures, repeated test issues, equipment performance concerns and MEP system interface problems.
  • Work with construction, commissioning, design, vendor and operations stakeholders to establish safe and technically sound recovery actions.
  • Confirm that commissioning issues are documented, assigned and tracked to an evidence-based closure.
  • Identify recurring commissioning constraints and recommend improvements to procedures, sequencing, temporary arrangements and future project planning.

4. Root Cause Analysis and Lessons Learnt

  • Support and review root cause analyses for material construction, quality, engineering and commissioning events.
  • Challenge incomplete problem statements, unsupported causal conclusions and corrective actions that do not address the identified cause.
  • Help distinguish immediate causes, contributing factors, systemic causes and required corrective or preventive actions.
  • Capture lessons learnt from mistakes, misunderstandings, misinterpretations, design gaps, scope gaps, specification gaps and commissioning issues.
  • Translate validated lessons into actionable recommendations, project controls, technical guidance or proposed controlled document changes.
  • Support verification that approved corrective actions and lessons are implemented and closed.

5. Regional CE&I Contribution

  • Provide targeted regional support to other APAC projects when requested and when compatible with primary site responsibilities.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary reviews with mechanical, electrical and project delivery specialists.
  • Contribute to programme reviews, technical assessments, technical papers, guidance documents and improvement initiatives.
  • Share proven solutions and emerging risks across the regional network to improve consistency and prevent recurrence.
  • Support feedback to the appropriate document owners where evidence indicates a need to clarify or update specifications, drawings, contracts or technical requirements.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, MEP construction, project engineering, or mission-critical infrastructure delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting complex construction projects through installation, testing, commissioning and close-out.
  • Practical understanding of multidisciplinary MEP systems and the interfaces between electrical, mechanical, plumbing, controls and life safety systems.
  • Experience investigating technical failures, supporting RCA development and implementing corrective actions and lessons learnt.
  • Experience working with designers, contractors, commissioning providers, equipment vendors, project managers and operations teams.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, technical submittals, testing documentation and commissioning records.
  • Professional engineering registration or chartered status is desirable where applicable.
  • Less than 10 years experience candidates will be reviewed based on specific DC, strong electrical/ MEP experience only.
