Sr. Software Engineer--M365 Routing team

The Microsoft 365 Routing team is looking for a highly motivated and technically strongSenior Software Engineer to build intelligent, scalable, and resilient routing services at the heart of Microsoft 365. Our platform directs requests across globally distributed microservices and infrastructure, enabling reliable, secure, and low-latency experiences for Microsoft 365 workloads, including Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Copilot.

In this role, you will own significant areas of the routing platform from architecture and implementation through deployment and production operations. You will work across organizational boundaries to solve complex distributed-systems challenges, proactively identify opportunities to improve availability and engineering efficiency, and use telemetry and AI to deliver measurable customer and operational impact.

• Design, implement, and operate highly available microservices that provide accurate, efficient, and secure routing across Microsoft 365’s global infrastructure.

• Lead the architecture and end-to-end delivery of technically complex features, converting ambiguous business and reliability requirements into clear designs, execution plans, and measurable outcomes.

• Improve service availability, routing accuracy, latency, capacity, deployment safety, incident rate, and time to detection and recovery using data, experimentation, and production telemetry.

• Build robust failure-handling and resiliency mechanisms, including dependency isolation, graceful degradation, automated detection, safe rollback, and disaster-recovery capabilities.

• Diagnose complex production issues and translate incident learnings into durable engineering improvements.

• Drive cross-team initiatives with partner services, infrastructure teams, security teams, and Microsoft 365 workload owners.

• Proactively identify high-value opportunities based on customer signals, operational pain points, technical debt, and emerging platform needs.

• Apply AI and agentic engineering techniques to accelerate development, testing, operational investigation, and service optimization.

• Establish and promote engineering standards through architecture reviews, code reviews, observability practices, testing strategies, and secure development processes.

• Mentor and unblock other engineers and help raise the technical and operational maturity of the team.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience. 
• Experience designing, developing, testing, and operating production software or online services.
• Demonstrated ability to own substantial engineering work from design through production deployment and ongoing operation.
• Experience collaborating with multiple engineering teams or stakeholders to deliver shared technical outcomes.
• Solid problem-solving, communication, and technical-design skills.
• Experience developing and operating large-scale distributed systems or cloud services through multiple production releases.
• Solid knowledge of distributed-systems principles, including consistency, partitioning, caching, concurrency, fault tolerance, load balancing, service discovery, and dependency management.
• Experience with highly available and resilient services, including capacity planning, observability, automated recovery, safe deployment, incident response, and disaster recovery.
• Experience with front-end, front-door, gateway, proxy, traffic-management, service-mesh, or request-routing systems.
• Proven record of using measurable service or customer outcomes to prioritize work and demonstrate impact.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence architecture or execution across organizational boundaries.
• Experience using AI, machine learning, or agentic systems to improve product capabilities, engineering productivity, service operations, or decision-making.
• Experience with Azure or another major cloud platform and modern deployment, telemetry, and configuration-management systems.
• Passion for engineering excellence, customer focus, continuous improvement, and developing other engineers.
