Applications ManagerÂ
Location: Hybrid – Kemmerer, WY
Type: W-2 contract, 3 year assignment
About the role
Provide leadership for the application teams that keep an organization in the energy sector running on its business and operations systems. The teams maintain and optimize a portfolio of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications. These include IBM Maximo with SSIS, and NextAxiom integrations, running mainly on Windows infrastructure with some Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This is a hands-on leadership role that bridges technology and the business, overseeing delivery quality and coordinating with stakeholders in engineering, operations, finance, supply chain and corporate functions.
We’re hiring at junior, mid and senior levels. Scope depends on experience.
What you’ll do
Lead the team
- Balance workload across departmental priorities, project commitments and production support, and keep stakeholders updated on delivery
- Set the team up to do good work: clear ownership, documented runbooks and realistic schedules
- Serve as operational owner for a portfolio of COTS applications: availability, performance, patching, upgrades, licensing and lifecycle planning
- Maintain the application portfolio data needed to manage lifecycle across the enterprise
- Plan and run upgrades and migrations with attention to testing, rollback, change control and user communication
- Partner with Architecture, Infrastructure, Information Security and Data Management on server platforms, identity and access, backup and recovery, monitoring and data integration
- Lead application implementations and enhancements from requirements through deployment and stabilization, working with internal stakeholders, implementation partners and vendors
- Manage software vendors and integrators to scope and schedule, escalate when needed, and know the contract
- Build working relationships with department leaders and understand their processes well enough to separate what they ask for from what they need
- Set up service levels, intake and prioritization processes that reduce friction
- Champion adoption, training and documentation so the applications deliver their value
- Make sure application changes follow change management, documentation and quality requirements
- Support compliance for records management, export-controlled information, cybersecurity controls and audit readiness, working with Information Security, Internal Audit, Legal and Quality
- Significant experience managing IT application teams
- 3–8 years managing technology resources, including employees and contractors, with direct accountability for their work and development
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, business or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience supporting or implementing COTS enterprise applications
- Strong working knowledge of Windows Server environments: Active Directory, IIS, SQL Server, Windows patching and change control
- Working familiarity with Linux administration, ideally RHEL, enough to lead a team supporting Linux-hosted applications
- Solid application support fundamentals: incident and change management, dev/test/prod environments, release testing, integrations and authentication
- Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and written and verbal communication skills
- Experience leading multiple application implementations, upgrades or migrations end to end
- Commercial nuclear power plant operations experience, ideally with accountability to NERC and FERC requirements
- Or experience at a regulated utility or heavy-industrial company
- Experience in a regulated or engineering-driven industry such as nuclear, energy, aerospace, defense or life sciences
- Experience with EDMS, EAM, PLM or engineering application portfolios
- ITIL-aligned service management practices and tools
- Scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, Python) and infrastructure-as-code concepts
- Cloud and hybrid hosting, particularly Azure or government cloud
- Introducing AI-assisted tools into application support or business workflows
- IBM Maximo administration or upgrades
- NextAxiom or a similar integration platform (MuleSoft, Boomi, Azure Integration Services)
- ServiceNow or a similar ITSM platform
- Cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST 800-53 or NERC CIP
- Junior (0–4 years): leads a small application team or workstream with guidance
- Mid (4–8 years): leads application delivery and support for a portfolio area independently
- Senior (8+ years): leads larger teams and portfolios, owns vendor relationships and advises business leaders
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and use stairs
- Travel: 0–5%
