Purpose
The Animal Breeder is responsible for executing daily animal care and production practices that support high-quality pork production through exceptional animal husbandry. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and productive environment for swine, ensuring operational excellence, and contributing to HANOR's commitment to stewardship of people, livestock, and the planet.

Essential Job Functions
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Conduct estrus detection and artificial insemination of female swine.
• Use ultrasound equipment to detect pregnancy.
• Provide care during and after farrowing, including piglet processing (medication, castration, tail docking, tagging).
• Collect, extend, and disseminate swine semen (Gene Transfer Center-specific).
• Receive, sort, and pen weaned pigs per protocols in nursery and finisher units.
• Operate gruel machines for weaned pigs and support disadvantaged animals.
• Administer vaccines via water, feed, or injection in accordance with protocols.
• Perform daily chores including walkthroughs, feed/water checks, and herd monitoring.
• Load in and load out pigs; assist with herd movements and whole herd vaccinations.
• Monitor animal health and perform treatment or humane euthanasia as necessary.
• Maintain clean and sanitary conditions throughout the facility.
• Conduct minor repairs and maintenance to buildings, pens, or equipment.
• Record all required production and medication data accurately and timely.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support production and animal welfare goals.

Supervisory Responsibilities
None. May assist in training new employees or leading specific tasks, depending on experience and site need.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, or related field preferred.
• Prior swine production experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Basic knowledge of swine behavior, anatomy, and care practices.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Attention to detail in observing animals and recording data.
• Willingness to perform physically demanding tasks in a farm environment.
• Effective communication and time management skills.
