Description: This is a remote position with PST Time zone preference.
You'll work from a prioritized backlog set by the hiring manager with weekly check-ins.
We value clear written communication, careful work, and finding the root cause of a problem rather than patching the symptom.
Position Overview:
This is a fixed-term role to stabilize a set of reporting data pipelines our team inherited from another group.
Several of these pipelines have quietly stopped updating while dashboards still read from them, and many have outdated alerting, inactive owners, or undocumented logic.
The Analytics Engineer will work through a defined, prioritized backlog of fixes, safely retire workflows and tables that no longer have consumers, and add monitoring so failures surface quickly in the future.
This is stabilization and cleanup work, not new development.
The role also covers checking that new product types, as they launch over the term, show up correctly in cost reporting, including a written reconciliation of the first reporting cycle for each.
By the end of the term, every pipeline touched should run cleanly, be monitored, and have a runbook so the team can maintain it going forward.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and repair a defined backlog of stalled or broken data pipelines feeding reporting dashboards, in priority order set by the hiring manager.
- Replace a drop-and-recreate table build with an in-place write that preserves existing access permissions.
- Migrate workflow alerting off a deprecated notification setting and route alerts to a team distribution list.
- Inventory BI data sources (Tableau published data sources and embedded SQL) to find duplicated logic and confirm downstream consumers before any change.
- Retire unused workflows and tables through a staged process: confirm there are no consumers, disable for one billing cycle, then remove.
- Build freshness/staleness checks for dashboard data extracts.
- Provide first-line triage of failures on the in-scope workflows (up to ~4 hours/week, business hours only, no on-call, no external communication).
- As new product types launch, confirm they flow into cost reporting and write a short reconciliation of the first cycle's volumes.
- Write a runbook for every workflow touched and hand all documentation to the hiring manager by the end of the term.
- Meet weekly with the hiring manager to review progress. All code changes go through pull-request review before merge.
- 3+ years in analytics or data engineering, including hands-on ownership of production pipelines.
- Strong SQL on a distributed query engine (Trino/Presto or similar).
- Python and pandas for data processing and validation.
- Experience building and maintaining scheduled workflows in an orchestration tool (Airflow or similar).
- Working knowledge of Tableau published data sources and extracts.
- Comfortable with git and pull-request workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to debug pipelines you didn't build, with incomplete documentation.
- Clear written documentation habits.
Nice to Haves or Preferred Skills:
- Experience with billing, cost, or financial reporting data.
- Jupyter notebooks and parameterized notebook execution (e.g., papermill).
- Airtable (read-only reporting).
- Familiarity with Iceberg or Hive table formats.
- Background in media, localization, or content supply chain data.
