Job Title: Pathologists' Assistant
Location: Albany, NY 12208
Duration: 13 Weeks (Contract Assignment)
Position Summary
The Pathologists' Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the overall efficiency and quality of the Pathology Department and laboratory services. This position is primarily responsible for the gross examination and preparation of surgical pathology specimens, supervision of autopsy services, and operational management of the morgue.
Working under the direction of a supervising Pathologist, the Pathologists' Assistant performs complex technical and administrative duties, contributes to workflow optimization, supports education and training initiatives, and ensures compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Pathology & Gross Examination
- Perform gross examination, description, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
- Gross complex surgical resections including but not limited to pelvic exenterations and Whipple procedures.
- Prepare specimens for histological processing according to established protocols.
- Maintain accurate documentation and specimen handling procedures.
- Assist Residents and laboratory personnel with gross dissections and technical procedures.
- Provide training and instruction in grossing techniques to Residents, medical students, and departmental staff.
- Support workflow optimization and operational efficiency in the grossing area.
Autopsy & Morgue Operations
- Manage day-to-day morgue operations based on patient care requirements and regulatory standards.
- Assist in autopsy prosection, including gross examination, PAD/FAD preparation, and clinical summaries.
- Provide leadership and technical expertise within the autopsy service.
- Ensure compliance with safety, accreditation, and quality assurance standards.
Administrative & Leadership Functions
- Exercise independent judgment in technical and administrative decision-making.
- Collaborate with Laboratory Director(s) on operational planning and improvements.
- Participate in project management, budgeting, and resource management.
- Oversee supply inventory and equipment management.
- Support staffing activities including hiring, competency assessments, staff development, and corrective actions.
- Participate in departmental seminars, education programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- ASCP Certification — Required
- New York State Pathologists' Assistant License — Required
- Proven experience grossingcomplex surgical pathology specimens — Required
- Strong autopsy and morgue management experience
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
- EPIC experience preferred
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience in pathology or autopsy services
- Teaching or training experience with Residents or laboratory staff
