About the Role

The Haematology Clinical Research Centre is seeking aSpecimen Shipment Laboratory Assistant to support the management, documentation and shipment of biological specimens associated with haematology clinical research.

Working under the guidance of the Unit Manager, you will coordinate the preparation and shipment of laboratory samples to local and international sponsors, ensuring specimens are handled, documented and dispatched safely and within study-specific requirements. You will play an important role in supporting the efficient operation of the Haematology Clinical Research Centre through accurate specimen tracking, database management, courier coordination and adherence to clinical trial laboratory manuals and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate and adhere to clinical trial laboratory manuals and study-specific instructions for the shipment of biological specimens.

• Prepare and check shipping documentation, including airway bills, customs documentation, specimen manifests, proformas and other study-specific documentation.

• Complete required paperwork and maintain accurate tracking and identification records for specimens leaving the laboratory.

• Coordinate daily courier bookings for specimens being shipped from the Haematology Clinical Research Centre.

• Collect processed samples from St Vincent's Pathology and ensure they are safely packed and prepared for shipment to local and international laboratories.

• Coordinate the preparation and dispatch of shipments according to study-specific schedules, ensuring time-sensitive specimens are sent within required timeframes.

• Enter and maintain accurate data in clinical trial databases, disease registries and other research databases.

• Assist with the identification, documentation and escalation of specimen shipment deviations, errors, near misses and incidents in accordance with departmental procedures.

• Assist with the development, review and implementation of specimen shipment procedures, checklists, templates and other operational documentation.

• Complete mandatory hospital training and study-specific training relating to specimen handling, processing and shipment.

• Work collaboratively with Clinical Trial Coordinators, Clinical Research Nurses, laboratory staff, investigators and other members of the multidisciplinary research team.

• Contribute to the efficient and safe operation of the Haematology Clinical Research Centre.

Your Contribution

To be successful in this role, you will be an organised and detail-focused professional with the ability to manage competing priorities and follow established procedures in a clinical research environment.

You will bring:

• A Bachelor of Science,or previous relevant experience working in a hospital, pathology, laboratory, clinical research or healthcare environment.

• Completion ofIATA Dangerous Goods training.

• Completion ofGood Clinical Practice (GCP) training.

• The ability to accurately follow written procedures, protocols, laboratory manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and study-specific instructions.

• Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accurate documentation.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.

• Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

• The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

• A commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

• A current National Criminal History Check, or willingness to obtain one.

About the Haematology Clinical Research Centre

TheHaematology Clinical Research Centre (HCRC) at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne provides coordination and care to patients participating in haematology clinical trials. Clinical treatment is delivered across the outpatient Cancer Centre Chemotherapy Day Unit and inpatient services. The HCRC works closely with haematologists, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory staff, investigators and other multidisciplinary teams to support the delivery of high-quality clinical research and patient care.
