Job Description Summary

The Activities Assistant assists the Director of Activities in planning, organizing, developing, and directing quality activities for patients, ensuring that the recreational, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social needs of each patient is met in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and MUSC Health’s standards. Assists in providing, based on the comprehensive assessment and care plan and the preferences of each patient, an ongoing program to support patients in their choice of activities, both facility-sponsored group and individual activities and independent activities, designed to meet the interests of and support the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each patient, encouraging both independence and interaction in the community.

PositionSummary

  • The Activities Assistant assists the Director of Activities in planning, organizing, developing, and directing quality activities for patients, ensuring that the recreational, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social needs of each patient is met in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and MUSC Health’s standards. Assists in providing, based on the comprehensive assessment and care plan and the preferences of each patient, an ongoing program to support patients in their choice of activities, both facility-sponsored group and individual activities and independent activities, designed to meet the interests of and support the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each patient, encouraging both independence and interaction in the community.

 

WorkingConditions

  • Attends and participates in continuing educationprograms
  • Works in department as well as throughoutfacility
  • Subject to frequent interruptions
  • Involved with patients, associates, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions andcircumstances
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, etc.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily asnecessary
  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout theworkday
  • Possible exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to the AIDS and hepatitis Bviruses

 

Education, Experience, andLicensure/Certifications

  • Must be a high school graduate orequivalent
  • Prior experience with geriatricspreferred

 

SpecificRequirements

  • Demonstrated proficiency in arts/crafts/music ispreferred
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant suchaction
  • Must be knowledgeable of activities practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing activities functions in the post-acute care facility
  • Must have the ability to implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the activitiesdepartment
  • Must perform proficiently in all applicable competencyareas
  • Maintains professional working relationships with all associates, vendors,etc.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidentialinformation
  • Must understand and follow company policies including harassment and complianceprocedures
  • Displays integrity and professionalism by adhering to MUSC Health’s polices and completes mandatory trainingsand other appropriate compliance training

 

EssentialFunctions

  • Must be able to assist in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating quality activity programs (includes entertainment, exercise, relaxation, and education)
  • Must be able to appropriately and descriptively chart patient progress andbehavior
  • Must be able to escort patients to and fromactivities
  • Must be able to make regular in-room visits to patients uninterested or unable to participate in groupactivities

  • Must exhibit excellent customer service and a positive attitude towardspatients
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation ofpatients
  • Must demonstrate dependable, regularattendance
  • Must be able to concentrate and use reasoning skills and goodjudgment
  • Must be able to communicate and function productively on an interdisciplinary team
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift, push, pull, stoop, walk, reach, and move intermittently during workinghours
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs floor to waist, lift 35 lbs waist to shoulder, lift and carry 35 lbs, and push/pull 35lbs

                                                                                           

Additional Job Description

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.  Credentials:  Basic Life Support andMUSC Safety Care Training required within 4 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
