The Accounting Manager directly reports to the Assistant Controller, overseeing a small team responsible for the accounting and reconciliation of cash movement, including daily store cash and funding, bank and payment activity, and sales audit, requiring in-depth analysis and comprehension of our business operations. This role is highly visible and integral to the accounting leadership team. The position requires significant partnership with Treasury, Accounts Payable, FP&A, Store Operations, and our banking and armored carrier partners to drive success metrics such as timely, accurate cash reconciliations and effective management of daily processes. The ideal candidate will identify opportunities for process improvement, mentor staff by providing constructive feedback and professional development opportunities, and collaborate effectively with our stores, store support center departments, senior management, and external stakeholders, such as banks and auditors.

Scope of Responsibility

  • Leads a small team in completing monthly corporate accounting and close activities, including reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, rollforwards, and other analyses related to cash, store deposits and funding, sales audit, and other significant accounting matters.
  • Oversees the daily reconciliation of store cash and funding, including store cash deposits, armored carrier activity, and store funding, to bank activity and the general ledger, and investigates and resolves variances and unreconciled items with stores, Treasury, and banking partners.
  • Leads the sales audit function, including daily review and reconciliation of store sales and tender activity (cash, checks, credit and debit cards, gift cards, and other tenders) from the point-of-sale system to the general ledger, bank deposits, and card processor settlements.
  • Reviews cash over/short, voids, returns, and other exceptions identified through sales audit, follows up with stores and operations leadership on discrepancies, and ensures timely and accurate adjustments.
  • Ensures daily cash activity is reconciled and that weekly and monthly bank reconciliations are prepared for corporate and store accounts, including identification and investigation of unreconciled or unusual items.
  • Verifies weekly wire and ACH batches for accuracy between the AP system and the banking system.
  • Manages day-to-day banking relationships for operational and store-level issues, and manages armored carrier relationships, particularly with regard to invoicing.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships across all levels of the organization to drive alignment and influence key stakeholders.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly accounting, reporting, and ad hoc analyses, including cash reconciliation and sales audit results, for senior management.
  • Provides management teams with appropriate information to facilitate budget, forecast, and other reporting needs, and provides actual store cash, deposit, and sales audit data to the Treasury team to support its cash positioning and forecasting.
  • Supports the monthly and quarterly financial reporting process, including review of disclosures related to areas of responsibility and assistance with preparation of financial review presentations.
  • Research accounting issues and provides competent guidance and advice for a variety of topics related to areas of responsibility, including cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash, revenue and tender accounting, and cash flow statement presentation.
  • Assists with the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal controls (including store cash handling, deposit, and sales audit controls), SOX control narratives, and accounting policies to promote effective governance and accurate financial reporting.
  • Conducts special projects assigned by the Assistant Controller, VP Controller, or CFO.
  • Answers questions from stores and store support center departments, banks, and other third-party partners.
  • Assists with the coordination of internal and external audit activities as necessary, including preparation and review of year-end audit work papers.
  • Serves as subject matter expert and escalation contact for cash reconciliation and sales audit functions and as liaison between the team, other internal departments, and third-party vendors.
