In this role, you’ll develop and improve packaging systems that protect our products, enhance transportation efficiency, support safe operations, reduce environmental impact, and optimize costs across the supply chain.
The Packaging Engineer partners closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Operations, Sourcing, Logistics, Suppliers, and Product Engineering teams to develop robust packaging solutions that prevent damage, improve material flow, reduce waste, and support field installation efficiency.
On a typical day you will:
- Design, develop, validate, and implement packaging solutions for components, assemblies, controllers, and elevator systems to ensure product protection during storage, handling, and transportation.
- Lead packaging improvement projects focused on reducing damage, improving pack density, minimizing waste, and lowering total packaging cost.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities by developing packaging specifications, packaging validation plans, and transportation testing requirements.
- Perform packaging root-cause investigations related to transit damage, field incidents, quality escapes, and customer complaints utilizing 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone methodologies.
- Develop and maintain packaging standards, work instructions, packaging drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and labeling requirements.
- Collaborate with suppliers and logistics providers to implement standardized packaging solutions and ensure compliance with Otis packaging requirements.
- Identify and execute sustainability initiatives including recyclable materials, packaging reduction, reusable packaging systems, and waste elimination projects.
- Support capital planning, automation, and packaging equipment implementation initiatives.
What you will need to be successful:
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
- At least 3 years of relevant engineering experience, including packaging, manufacturing, logistics, or a closely related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience supporting industrial packaging, manufacturing or distribution operations, with exposure to packaging design, transportation damage reduction, validation, and testing.
- Professional certifications or training such as CPP, Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, Project Management certification, or ISTA packaging training are preferred.
