Shift Engineer

Your Role

As a Shift Engineer, you will play a vital role in keeping our production facility operating safely, efficiently and reliably. Working as part of a close-knit team, you will be responsible for maintaining plant equipment, responding to breakdowns, and driving long-term engineering improvements that maximise uptime and performance.

This is a hands-on role that offers a varied workload, combining preventative maintenance, fault finding, project work and continuous improvement activities. You'll work closely with production colleagues, contractors and the Engineering Team Manager to ensure the site operates to the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental compliance.

Your Responsibilities

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities and respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimise downtime.
• Diagnose faults and return plant and equipment to operation as quickly and safely as possible.
• Work with the Engineering Team Manager to identify and implement permanent solutions for recurring equipment issues.
• Complete daily and weekly boiler maintenance and inspection activities.
• Ensure all electrical maintenance is carried out safely and in accordance with Electricity at Work Regulations.
• Inspect, maintain and monitor pressure systems, including steam, condensate and compressed air systems.
• Safely isolate plant and equipment to enable maintenance, cleaning and contractor work to be completed safely.
• Support and coordinate external contractors when required.
• Issue and control Permits to Work and Isolation Certificates, ensuring all procedures are followed correctly.
• Communicate spare parts requirements and usage to ensure critical parts remain available and stock is maintained.
• Accurately record maintenance activities using maintenance logs and the Asset Management System (DSL).
• Maintain high housekeeping standards, ensuring work areas are left safe, clean and tidy.
• Promote a "right first time" approach, focusing on robust, long-term engineering solutions rather than temporary fixes.
• Comply with all relevant Health & Safety legislation, site procedures and safe working practices.
• Follow Risk Assessments, Permit to Work systems, Isolation Procedures and Safe Systems of Work.
• Ensure tools, lifting equipment and associated assets are used and maintained in accordance with LOLER requirements.
• Support compliance with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standards.
• Actively contribute to environmental protection by responding appropriately to spillages and preventing contamination of surface water systems.
• Assist with maintaining site security and support production teams as required.
• Contribute to engineering projects, site improvements and any other duties appropriate to the role.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Mechanical engineering qualification.
• Electrical engineering qualification.
• Experience of boiler maintenance.

• Good understanding of COSHH requirements.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Self-motivated with a positive, can-do attitude.

Desirable

• First Aid qualification.
