Project Manager, Preconstruction

The Project Manager, Preconstruction, will manage the preconstruction phases of utility-scale renewable energy projects. Reporting to the Director of Preconstruction in the Engineering & Construction department, the Project Manager will be responsible for the early to late-stage activities including managing project schedules, project budgets, stakeholder communication, constructability reviews, risk analysis, and change management. This is an exciting opportunity to provide mid-stage project support to our growing and continue to elevate Apex’s reputation a leader within the renewable energy industry, amplify project efforts, and help realize projects. In this position, you will manage multiple renewable energy projects with competing deadlines and resources. 

Our ideal candidate will have experience managing contract requirements, stakeholder relations, project deliverables, as well as establishing and monitoring performance metrics, project schedules, risk profiles, and cost-performances. The candidate for this position should be collaborative and capable of working in a fast-paced environment and should be familiar with project management techniques and software.

The right candidate will be a hard-working team player who can jump in and support projects from a variety of angles. This position requires equally excellent communication and technical skills as well as the ability to work well under pressure, multitask, and be flexible about shifting priorities. A passion for renewable energy is a must.

Primary Responsibilities

• Manage the project schedules from early-stage development through hand off at late-stage development
• Manage the early phase of the projects within the budget and schedule approved by management
• Manage the projects’ advancement and coordinates with project stakeholders to ensure a successful project hand off with Execution Project Management team
• Manage EPC RFP process, coordinating with bidders, leading Q&A sessions, shortlisting, and recommending project awards
• Leading coordination with utilities after Interconnection Agreement execution, managing milestone schedule and spends
• Manage constructability reviews, risk analysis, and change management
• Manage projects using industry standard project management tools
• Always ensure high work quality and safe work practices
• Drive compliance with all internal company policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management, advanced degree is preferred
• At least 5-years of related engineering or project management experience; experience working for an EPC firm or renewable energy company
• Experience managing pre-construction of multiple renewable energy projects is preferred
• Experience with project controls for early-stage industrial engineering, procurement, and pre-construction is required
• Must have sufficient training in project management techniques
• Able to read, write, understand, and speak English proficiently
• High standard of integrity and reliability
• Working knowledge of the standardized project management processes and tools
• Working knowledge of project scheduling concepts and techniques
• Strong attention to detail with a high level of integrity and organizational capacity to manage multiple projects
• Strong track record of successful collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
• Creative problem-solving skills matched with strength in executing under pressure and with continuous change
• A proven ability to provide efficient, timely, and reliable service to internal and external stakeholders
• Self-motivated with proven ability to take ownership, initiative, and accountability
• Willingness to travel 20-30%
• Employee is frequently required to walk in fields and other uneven terrain. The employee is also occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
• The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
• Able to work from our headquarters in Charlottesville, VA

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
