Software Development Engineer — Mobility Engineering

About the Team

We are theWEX Mobility team, dedicated to building mission-critical services and modern API interfaces for WEX’s industry-leading fuel card platform. We design and develop APIs and scalable services that support both internal and external customers, creating the foundation for new products, capabilities, and opportunities across WEX.

Our team works in a modern, cloud-native environment with technologies includingJava, Python, Kafka, Elasticsearch, AWS, APIs, microservices, and containerization. We are an agile and collaborative team that values ownership, technical excellence, adaptability, and continuous learning.

How You’ll Make an Impact

• Design, develop, and maintainscalable, reliable backend services and APIs supporting mission-critical business capabilities.

• Build and enhancemicroservices and distributed systems using modern software engineering practices.

• Work with relational and NoSQL databases, includingOracle and PostgreSQL, with a focus on performance, scalability, and data integrity.

• Develop solutions using technologies such asKafka, Elasticsearch, AWS, and containerized environments.

• Contribute to cloud-native architecture and help evolve our platforms for scale, availability, security, and reliability.

• Write clean, maintainable, testable, and well-documented code.

• Participate in code reviews and collaborate with engineers, product partners, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.

• Troubleshoot complex technical issues and contribute to sustainable, long-term solutions.

• ApplyDevOps practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, and monitoring.

• Demonstrate the ability tolearn new technologies and adapt across different technology stacks as business and technical needs evolve.

• Take ownership of projects and contribute from requirements and design through development, testing, deployment, and production support.

Experience You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• 3+ years of professional software development experience, preferably building backend or distributed applications.

• Strong programming experience inJava and/or Python, with a solid understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering fundamentals.

• Strong understanding ofdata structures, algorithms, problem-solving, and API design.

• Experience building and supportingRESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud-based applications.

• Experience working with relational databases such asOracle, PostgreSQL, or similar technologies, including writing and optimizing SQL.

• Exposure toNoSQL databases, Elasticsearch, or other distributed data technologies.

• Experience with or understanding ofevent-driven architectures and Kafka.

• Experience withAWS or another major cloud platform, along with exposure to infrastructure-as-code and DevOps practices.

• Understanding ofCI/CD, automated testing, containerization, and modern software development practices.

• Ability to work effectively in an agile, collaborative environment and communicate technical concepts clearly.

• Demonstratedcuriosity, adaptability, and willingness to learn new technologies.

Bonus Points For

• Experience withKafka, Elasticsearch, AWS, Java, or Python.

• Experience withTerraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools.

• Experience withDocker, Kubernetes, or other containerization technologies.

• Experience modernizing legacy applications or migrating between database technologies, such asOracle to PostgreSQL.
