Position Summary
The Virtual Analysis Engineer – Vehicle Dynamics Simulation is responsible for leading all Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and virtual analysis activities throughout all phases of vehicle program development.
This role focuses on steering and suspension hardpoint development, component optimization, stiffness and damping characteristics, tire specifications, and ride and handling performance optimization across all variants of a vehicle architecture.
The engineer will formulate design recommendations to meet the functional objectives of the company's vehicles while minimizing vehicle and suspension sensitivity to variations in road-induced forces, assembly and build variations, vehicle architecture, and component wear.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and optimize the kinematics and compliance of suspension and steering subsystems.
- Conduct analytical assessments of steady-state and transient vehicle handling behavior.
- Calculate component loads associated with various handling events, including fishhook maneuvers, trailer towing, slow ramp steer, step steer, and off-road events for trail rating.
- Simulate vehicle ride events and characterize performance across low- and high-frequency conditions, including impact harshness, vehicle pitch under braking, head toss, shimmy, wander, and brake judder.
- Develop, validate, maintain, and take ownership of full-vehicle and subsystem simulation models using:
- Multibody dynamics: ADAMS/Car
- Parametric simulation: CarSim and VI-Car RealTime
- Flexible-body analysis: NASTRAN
- Develop simulation models remotely and provide onsite support for driving simulator studies.
- Formulate and execute analytical support plans for physical vehicle mule tuning activities.
- Develop and enhance CAE and simulation processes as needed to improve analysis efficiency and accuracy.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to develop design recommendations that improve vehicle dynamics, ride comfort, and handling performance.
- Summarize and present simulation results, technical findings, and design recommendations to management and cross-functional teams.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent field from an accredited university.
Technical Skills and Experience:
- Experience with simulation processes and techniques related to suspension, steering, and brake system kinematics, compliance, and vibration studies.
- Experience conducting vehicle ride and handling assessments and component structural analysis.
- Demonstrated understanding of vehicle dynamics theory and its practical applications.
- Hands-on experience with relevant simulation and engineering tools, including:
- ADAMS/Car
- Altair HyperWorks
- NASTRAN
- CarSim
- VI-Car RealTime
- MATLAB
- Familiarity with Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
- Ability to extract component details and engineering data using NX, Teamcenter, and CoDeP.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned engineering activities.
- Demonstrated ability to summarize technical findings and present results to management and cross-functional teams.
- High level of proficiency in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
- Hands-on experience with CarSim software.
- Ability to develop custom routines using Visual Basic, ADAMS command files, ADAMS/Car templates, and MATLAB to support simulation process improvements and automation.
