JOB DESCRIPTION
App Dev Migration SME – Google Cloud
We are seeking an experienced Application Development Migration SME to lead the transformation and modernization of our application portfolio as we migrate to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
This individual will serve as the bridge between software development teams and cloud infrastructure teams, ensuring applications are cloud-native, scalable, secure, and optimized for performance in the Google Cloud environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Application Assessment & Migration Strategy
- Assess existing applications and determine the most appropriate cloud migration strategy.
- Evaluate whether applications should be rehosted, replatformed, refactored, or modernized.
- Identify opportunities to decompose monolithic applications into scalable microservices.
- Recommend the appropriate balance between Lift-and-Shift approaches for speed and Refactoring for long-term scalability and quality.
- Lead the containerization of applications using technologies such as Docker and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
- Ensure applications are designed and configured to run reliably in containerized environments.
- Define container architecture, deployment standards, and operational best practices.
- Modernize legacy applications by migrating workloads from traditional server-based environments to Google Cloud-native services.
- Design and implement solutions using platforms such as:
- Google Cloud Run
- Google App Engine
- Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)
- Serverless and managed cloud services
- Improve application scalability, resiliency, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Partner with DevOps and automation teams to design and implement CI/CD pipelines.
- Build automated application build, testing, deployment, and release processes.
- Utilize tools such as Google Cloud Build and related CI/CD technologies.
- Ensure software changes can be safely and consistently deployed into Google Cloud environments.
- Design and implement secure API integration strategies.
- Use technologies such as Apigee to enable secure communication between internal applications and external services.
- Establish API governance, security, lifecycle management, and integration standards.
Application Development Background
- Strong software development background with experience in one or more of the following:
- Java
- Python
- .NET
- Go
- Strong understanding of application development practices and the challenges developers face during cloud migrations.
- Strong hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
- Deep understanding of container orchestration, deployment, scaling, monitoring, and application management.
- Strong experience developing application migration and modernization strategies.
- Proven ability to evaluate and execute:
- Rehosting
- Replatforming
- Refactoring
- Microservices modernization
- Strong knowledge of the Google Cloud application and infrastructure ecosystem.
- Experience with:
- GKE
- Cloud Run
- App Engine
- Cloud Build
- Apigee
- Serverless technologies
- Managed database services
- Ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs and recommend appropriate cloud solutions.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native application architecture, scalability, resiliency, security, and cost optimization.
