General Summary

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test;AND
• Have had three (3) years full-time experience operating large scale mainframe or server computers with multiprocessing, teleprocessing and all associated peripherals.
• Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for the class of Data Processing Equipment Operator II.
• Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Considerable knowledge of the operation of IBM computers and peripheral equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques employed in recording, interpreting, and tabulating data through the use of a computer.
• Considerable ability to work with a high degree of accuracy in receiving and processing complex data.
• Considerable ability to work under rigorous production schedules.
• Considerable ability to effectively adapt work schedules to meet changing priorities and/or emergencies.
• Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.
• Reasonable ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions.
• Reasonable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other data processing employees and with representatives of user departments and municipalities.
• Reasonable ability to direct the work activities of other personnel.
• Reasonable knowledge of modern office and record keeping practices and procedures.
• Reasonable ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
• Reasonable knowledge of local governmental programs and operations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

• When designated as a shift leader, instructs, assigns and reviews work of other Data Processing Equipment Operators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Operates the computer and peripheral equipment and monitors the operator's console, responding to instructions and messages displayed there by the manipulation of control switches as required to maintain efficient operation.
• Performs job set‑up necessary to run moderately difficult and complex programs using documentation and procedures provided by the departmental programming and production control staff as well as published standards.
• Prepares the peripheral input/output devices to ensure efficient job‑to‑job transitions.
• Performs job tear‑down duties at the completion of the program's operation, removes documents from printer and forwards to the Quality Assurance Unit for final preparation and distribution.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Places service calls, installs replacement devices, converses with customers over the phone and otherwise takes action to resolve customer problems with the teleprocessing network.
• Responds to requests for assistance from customers or departmental personnel in areas of missing or delayed reports and other applications failures.
• Utilizes current county-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.
• Ability to move, lift or carry computer peripherals that may be larger or awkwardly sized.
• Ability to gather, interpret and analyze data of various sources.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is performed in a typical office or centralized computer facility environment.
