About The Stop: 

The Stop Community Food Centre’s mission is to increase access to healthy food in a manner thatmaintains dignity, builds community, and challenges inequality. The Stop began40+ years ago as one of North America’s first food banks. Ithas since grown into a vibrant community centre that uses food as a gateway to address many issues including poverty, the environment, social isolation, and health.

The Opportunity & Commitment: 

The Stop is seeking(3) individuals to join its Board of Directors. These individuals willbringexpertise, dedication, lived experience, and vision to our organization. We are specifically seekingpeoplewith a range of qualifications and interests, includingbut not limited toHuman Resources, Legal,Development (Fundraising), and Board
Governance, as well as familiarity with The Stop and ideally,previous board experience. Asa community-based grassroots organization, we encourage applications froma diverse group, particularly thoseresiding in the neighbourhoods surrounding The Stop’s three locations. 

The Stop’s Board of Directorsis a
governanceBoard.Directors areexpected to attendquarterly Board meetings,participate inthe work ofat least oneCommittee of the Board
between Board meetings, and commit to serving a three-year term, with an opportunity to renewfora second three-year term. 

 

Commitments of Directors include: 

  • Act with fiduciary responsibility, exercising due diligence in all decision-making,upholdingthe organization’sbylaws and
    alwaysoperating in the best interests of the organization.. 
  • Regular attendance at quarterly Board meetings (4:00p -8:00p), the Annual General Meeting, and meetings of at least one Committee of the Board. 
  • Prepare foreachBoard andCommittee
    meeting, including a thoroughreview of allmaterials, financials, and committee reports to ensure informed decision-making. 
  • Athree-year term
    with the possibility of renewal for anadditional consecutive three-year term. 
  • Familiarity withactivities of The Stop and the larger food security and social services sector in Toronto and further afield. 
  • Build collaborative working relationships with fellowBoard members and the Executive Director. 
  • Be a donor,participate in fundraising activities and volunteer to occasionallyassist in program delivery.  
  • Actively recruit support for the Stop from personal and professional networks. 
  • Be a resource for the Executive Director, or their designate, when called upon to provideparticular expertise. 



Applicants are reviewed by the Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC) of the Board of Directors, including the Executive Director.We thank all applicantsbut will only respond to those who are invited to interview.GNC recommendations are voted upon by the Board of Directors, and successful candidates will be invited to jointhe Boardimmediately. A slate of allDirectorsof the Board ispresented tothe Stop's membershipfor a vote of acceptanceat every Annual General Meeting in November.
