Accounting Manager/Controller – Construction

Location: South Florida

Schedule: Full-Time | Onsite

Compensation: $95,000–$110,000+, depending on experience


The Opportunity

A growing construction organization in South Florida is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead the accounting function and serve as a strategic financial partner to senior leadership. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role for someone who understands the complexities ofconstruction accounting and has previously operated at theAccounting Manager, Controller, or similar leadership level.


They need someone who can own the integrity of the financials, lead a small accounting team, understand what is happening across active projects, and confidently present financial information to leadership with clear recommendations and insights. Construction accounting experience is required, particularly around WIP, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, job costing, retainage, over/underbillings, and project profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Own the month-end close process and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting.
  • Prepare monthly P&L, balance sheet, and operational financial reports.
  • Analyze financial results and provide commentary around trends, variances, risks, and opportunities.
  • Reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including accrued expenses, retainage, over/underbillings, prepaid expenses, and payroll liabilities.
  • Prepare and present financial reporting and executive-level metrics to leadership.


WIP & Construction Accounting

  • Own and maintain monthly WIP schedules across active projects.
  • Prepare and reconcile percentage-of-completion revenue recognition calculations.
  • Manage and analyze overbillings and underbillings.
  • Review job cost reports and identify projects trending above or below budget.
  • Partner with operations and project leadership to understand labor, material, subcontractor, and margin variances.
  • Manage construction-related accruals and ensure revenue and expenses are recognized appropriately.
  • Support project closeout and final financial reconciliation.
  • Oversee accounting related to retainage and construction billing.


Cash Flow & Forecasting

  • Maintain and manage short-term and rolling cash flow forecasts.
  • Monitor company cash position and upcoming financial obligations.
  • Prepare cash flow and profitability projections to support business decisions.
  • Provide proactive insight into liquidity, spending, and capital needs.


Budgeting & Strategic Planning

  • Lead the annual budgeting process.
  • Partner with operational leaders to develop realistic departmental and project-related budgets.
  • Maintain budget-to-actual reporting and explain material variances.
  • Help leadership use financial information to drive strategic and operational decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve margins, manage costs, strengthen controls, and improve financial performance.


Banking, Bonding & Compliance

  • Support banking relationships and credit requirements.
  • Prepare financial packages for surety bonding and construction prequalification.
  • Coordinate with outside accounting partners for year-end tax preparation.
  • Support year-end reporting and compliance activities.
  • Assist with insurance and related accounting matters as needed.


AP, AR & Billing Oversight

  • Provide leadership and oversight across accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Review aging reports, vendor balances, and payment activity.
  • Review construction billing and ensure billings appropriately reflect cost and profitability.
  • Oversee vendor statement reconciliation and construction-related receivables.
  • Ensure accounting processes are accurate, timely, and scalable.


Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Lead and develop a small accounting team.
  • Assign priorities, review work product, and help develop the capabilities of accounting staff.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor while remaining willing to stay hands-on when necessary.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, reporting, and accounting efficiency.
  • Help support future accounting system and process improvements as the business continues to grow.
  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to senior leadership on time-sensitive business and financial decisions.


What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience as an Accounting Manager, Controller, Assistant Controller, or comparable accounting leader.
  • Direct experience within the construction industry is required.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of: WIP schedules, Percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, Job costing, Retainage
  • Demonstrated ability to independently close the books and prepare financial statements.
  • Experience managing or mentoring accounting staff.
  • Ability to confidently present financial information to executives and ownership.
  • Strong cash flow forecasting and financial analysis skills.
  • Experience working within a small to mid-sized accounting environment.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Comfortable working onsite and partnering closely with leadership and operations.
  • Strong sense of personal integrity, ethics, accountability, and sound judgment.
  • Natural leadership presence with the ability to coach, collaborate, and challenge when needed.


Compensation & Benefits

  • $95,000–$110,000+ base salary, depending on experience.
