With 587 miles of coastal waterways, marine safety is a priority of theEnvironmental Management Division withinPinellas County Public Works Department. If you have experience working on the water and understand marine safety, navigation, or waterway markers, the Marine Safety Coordinator role gives you an opportunity to make a direct impact.

You’ll coordinate the County’s waterway marker program, support derelict vessel removal, and work with local, state, and federal agencies to help protect boaters, residents, visitors, and our coastal environment.

What Would You Do?

• Manages the County’s uniform waterway marker (UWM) program marking restricted speed and boating safety zones, (including permitting, inspections, database management, and compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements). 
• Manages the County’s privately owned aids to navigation (PAToN) program consisting of day beacons and buoys, (including permitting, inspections, database management, and compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements). 
• Manages the County’s Derelict Vessel Removal program and secures contracts with marine salvage vendors for their removal.
• Secures and manages contracts with marine contractors and supervises installation of pilings, waterway markers and aids to navigation
• Acts as a liaison between the County and Federal, State and Local agencies and represents the County at Federal, State and local marine meetings.
• Performs administrative duties as necessary such as maintaining a budget and updating inventory and maintenance of all waterway markers and aids to navigation within the County’s asset management system.
• Conducts minor vessel and trailer repairs and coordinates additional maintenance activities with the County’s fleet department and private mechanics.
• Operation, towing and trailering (launch and recovery) of medium sized power boats.
• Additional duties may be assigned and not included in the above listing.

What Do You Need To Have?

Experience: professional level experience in the maintenance and permitting of marine structures, preferably waterway markers, and including ensuring compliance with federal and state laws.

Education: degree with major course work in physical, natural, or biological science, environmental engineering, or related field.

• Six (6) years of experience as described above.
• An Associate’s degree as described above and four (4) years of experience as described above.
• Bachelor’s or higher-level degree as described above, and two (2) years of experience as described above.

Additional Requirements:

• Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver's License.
• Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including mandatory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
• Competency in small and medium sized boat handling, towing and trailer operations (launch and recovery).
• U.S. Coast Guard Boater safety course certification or equivalent.
• Skill with power and hand tools.

Highly Desirable:

• Experience working with the public, public officials, and regulatory agencies.
• Possesses United States Coast Guard issued license.
• Experience working in marine construction.
• Experience working with state and federal regulatory requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of marine safety issues, laws, regulations, and policies.
• Knowledge of marine construction practices, materials, and skilled using power and hand tools.
• Ability to safely operate a medium sized power boat (with possession of U.S. Coast Guard Boater safety course certification or equivalent) and skilled in towing and trailering operations (launch and recovery).
• Ability to swim.
• Ability to work outdoors and on the water, in both cold and hot environments, with possible exposure to inclement weather and sub-optimal boating conditions.
