JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for operating assigned steam heated vacuum pans and crystallization to manufacture raw sugar during the crop season. Work involves setting temperature and pressure gauges on cooking machines to produce sugar and performing related sugar boiling work as needed or assigned. At the conclusion of the crop season, at management’s discretion, the individual selected can expect to return to their prior repair season position (if any) or be assigned to a repair season position as needed.

Work is performed under limited supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs all operations of assigned vacuum pans

  • Coordinates the operation of assigned vacuum pans according to the supervisor’s instructions

  • Controls the development and growth of sugar crystals in the vacuum pans manually and/or by using instruments

  • Discharges massecuite with uniform and proper size crystals; avoids false grains and/or conglomerates

  • Achieves the correct purity and brix in the minimum time

  • Operates computers that control the pans, including navigating through multiple screens

  • Ensures that samples are taken throughout the shift

  • Maintains a clean and safe work area

  • Works collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to achieve project goals

  • Ensures the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times

  • Follows organizational safety guidelines and protocols, performs job functions in a safe manner, and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in sugar fabrication processes and procedures;

  • OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual – English and Spanish

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of sugar fabrication processes and procedures

  • Knowledge of safety protocols and compliance standards related to sugar fabrication

  • Skill in using mathematics required for the work

  • Ability to read gauges, interpret process data, and adjust equipment settings

  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and senior workers

  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and protocols and perform job functions in a safe manner

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, while maintaining consistent performance and adherence to operational standards.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds

  • Ability to maintain regular attendance to ensure efficient and effective performance of job duties

  • Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds).
