Senior Software Engineer, Product

About the Role

This is a senior full-stack engineering role at a growing legal-tech company focused on making high-skilled immigration more accessible. You will own product development across both an internal case management platform and a client-facing portal, working end to end on React applications, APIs, data models, and real-time systems. The team is small, bicoastal, and engineering is genuinely central to how the company operates, not an afterthought.

The ideal candidate has shipped product across frontend and backend for four or more years, with deep expertise in React and TypeScript. You thrive in early-stage environments where you can own architectural decisions and drive features from rough idea to polished, reliable software. Experience with collaborative editing, real-time systems, and AI-powered workflows is a strong plus. Candidates who have spent their entire career at large enterprise or big-tech companies, or who trained primarily through a coding bootcamp, are unlikely to be a strong fit here.

Key Responsibilities

1. Build core product capabilities end to end, spanning frontend React applications and backend APIs and data models
2. Evolve the React architecture to support increasingly complex workflows, application state, and live data requirements
3. Design and build document editing, review, and collaboration experiences, including interfaces for supervising AI-powered workflows
4. Partner with product and the design engineer to move ideas from early prototype through to polished, production-ready features
5. Reason clearly about where responsibilities belong across client and server and make those architectural calls confidently
6. Take hard, unfamiliar problems, research and prototype independently, and drive them to working solutions without waiting for sign-off
7. Collaborate directly with legal operations, product, and customers on a weekly basis to keep engineering grounded in real user needs

Required Skills & Experience

• 4 or more years shipping product across frontend and backend
• Deep expertise in React and TypeScript
• Proven experience building sophisticated web applications with strong understanding of state management, performance, synchronization, and concurrent changes
• Comfortable building and reasoning about backend services, APIs, and data models
• Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in computer science or a related field
• Experience at a VC-backed startup or as an early employee at a growth-stage company
• Ability to work on-site in San Francisco or New York 3 to 4 days per week

Preferred Skills

• Experience taking a product from 0 to 1 and owning architectural decisions as usage and complexity scaled
• Familiarity with collaborative application patterns, CRDTs, SSE, or WebSockets
• Experience building editor or real-time collaboration experiences
• Exposure to AI-powered product development
• Understanding of workflow orchestration and asynchronous systems, including queues, events, retries, idempotency, and failure recovery
• Proficiency in Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, or FastAPI
