PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for leading, supporting, developing, and implementing company health and safety programs, policies, procedures, and training to maintain a safe, healthful, and accident-free work environment.

The Health and Safety Manager must maintain a strong working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local occupational health and safety laws and regulations. This position works closely with managers, supervisors, and employees to promote safe work practices, identify and correct workplace hazards, reduce injuries and incidents, and maintain compliance with company safety programs and regulatory requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Lead, develop, implement, and manage company health and safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA, Oregon OSHA, and other occupational health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Provide company-specific and required safety training to employees, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Hazard Communication (HazCom), Fire Prevention, Heat Illness Prevention, Injury and Illness Prevention, Machine Guarding, Forklift Safety, PPE, and other required safety topics.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by developing processes, systems, and programs designed to identify workplace hazards and prevent injuries and incidents before they occur.
  • Coach and mentor managers and supervisors on safety expectations, safe work practices, hazard recognition, and employee accountability.
  • Conduct and coordinate accident, injury, near-miss, and incident investigations to identify root causes and establish corrective and preventative measures.
  • Conduct routine workplace safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and gaps in compliance.
  • Follow up on identified safety concerns and corrective actions to ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and other safety-related procedures and documentation.
  • Maintain required OSHA records, reports, documentation, and safety-related recordkeeping.
  • Monitor workplace safety practices and ensure company safety policies and procedures are consistently followed.
  • Assist management and supervisors in evaluating work processes, equipment, and procedures for potential safety hazards.
  • Recommend appropriate corrective actions, safeguards, training, or procedural changes when safety hazards are identified.
  • Coordinate and support required safety meetings, training sessions, and safety initiatives.
  • Maintain organized and accurate safety training records and other required safety documentation.
  • Serve as a resource to employees, supervisors, and management regarding workplace health and safety requirements and company safety policies.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Effectively manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize safety objectives based on risk and operational needs.
  • Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Health and Safety, Safety Management, or a related field preferred;or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience.
  • At least seven years of experience leading health and safety programs, preferably within a manufacturing, industrial, sawmill, or wood-products environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA and Oregon OSHA regulations and requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial and manufacturing safety practices, including LOTO, machine guarding, HazCom, PPE, forklift safety, fire prevention, and accident prevention.
  • Ability to develop, implement, administer, and maintain effective health and safety programs.
  • Ability to develop and effectively deliver safety training to employees, supervisors, and managers.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections, safety audits, incident investigations, and root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to identify workplace hazards and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with both hourly and salaried employees.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, and applicable regulatory officials.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Previous wood-products manufacturing or sawmill experience is preferred.
