Entry-level Transportation Engineer/Planner (2026 and 2027)

These opportunities for personal and professional growth are maximized through exposure to a wide variety of transportation planning, engineering, and design projects, which may include:

Transportation planning and analysis: transportation impact studies, bicycle and pedestrian planning, access, circulation and parking studies, multimodal operations, VMT assessments, transportation demand management (TDM), climate action plans, and freight planning.

Traffic operations, forecasting, and safety: traffic operations analysis, transit forecasting and operations, travel behavior forecasting, systemic safety studies, and highway interchange and corridor studies.

Transportation design: complete streets, bikeways, signing and striping, traffic signals/ITS, street lighting, roundabouts, temporary traffic control, cost estimates, project specifications, and design drawings from concept through construction-ready documents.

Responsibilities

• Conduct transportation analysis and prepare reports, memos, and other technical deliverables 
• Participate in meetings, including preparing presentations and public outreach materials 
• Support project coordination and management activities  
• Engage with professional organizations and industry activities 
• Conduct site visits and collect field data  
• Explore opportunities to contribute to Fehr & Peers internal Research and Development program 
• Embrace opportunities to learn and adopt new tools, technologies, and ways of working that enhance day-to-day work, while maintaining professional judgment, critical thinking, and accountability for results

What Your First Year May Look Like

By the end of the first month:

• • Participate in on-the-job training and mentoring 
  • Contribute to several different projects 
  • Seek additional work from project managers 

  By the end of six months:

  • • Work on a variety of projects with staff throughout the office 
    • Build proficiency with several technical software programs 
    • Prepare deliverables, including memos, reports, and presentations 
    • Take on increasing independence and responsibility for your work

    By the end of the first year:

    • • Participate in multiple client meetings 
      • Take on increased responsibility for coordinating and managing small projects or project tasks
      • Start to develop deeper experience in areas that align with project opportunities, your interests, and your growing skills

Qualifications

We’re looking for candidates who bring curiosity, initiative, and a collaborative approach to their work. You do not need experience in every topic area or software program listed below—we expect you to continue learning and developing on the job. Experience can come from internships, employment, coursework, research, student organizations, volunteer activities, or other relevant experiences.

• A completed bachelor’s or in-progress master’s degree in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban and regional planning, or a related field such as geography, math, statistics, or economics.
• Relevant coursework in transportation, engineering, urban and regional planning, geography, math, statistics, economics, or related subjects. An EIT is preferred for engineering candidates.
• Experience or exposure in the following transportation topic areas: Field work, traffic operations analysis, signal design, transportation planning, bicycle and pedestrian planning, transit planning, infrastructure finance, transportation and land use policy, travel demand modeling, and related areas. 
• Experience or exposure to relevant technical software and tools: Microsoft Excel; GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS); CAD (AutoCAD, Microstation); traffic operations analysis tools (HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, Vistro, VISSIM, Sidra); travel demand modeling tools (Cube/Voyager, TransCAD, VISUM, Emme); and programming languages such as Python or R. 
• Previous experience in a professional or team environment related to transportation or another relevant field is helpful but may come from a variety of settings and experiences.
• An entrepreneurial spirit and proactive approach to communication and getting work done. 
• Genuine curiosity about transportation and familiarity with the challenges of day-to-day travel within your community.
• Interpersonal skills, a desire to collaborate, and a creative approach to problem-solving. 
• Organizational skills and the ability to balance priorities between multiple tasks within a defined timeline.
• Experience with technical writing and public speaking through school and/or work experience. 
• Openness to exploring and responsibly using new technologies and tools, while maintaining critical thinking and professional judgment.
