Part-Time Lecturer: DM2006 Narratives for Interaction

The School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified candidates to apply as Part-time Lecturer for DM2006 Narratives for Interaction.

The Part-time Lecturer is expected to teach an undergraduate course commencing in January of 2027.

Narratives for Interaction introduces students to the core concepts of narrativity and interaction in new media, including digital and analogue games, interactive stories, database narratives and interactive installations. Different modes of interactivity are studied through examples and discussion of theories of interaction, covering linear, parallel, multithreaded, branched and non-linear narrative structures, and the balance between interactivity and narration within a project. Students examine nonlinear digital storytelling strategies, database narrative forms, and procedurally generated and generative narratives, alongside their historical precedents in literature, art and media. Students embark on a practical project in order to apply ideas and techniques of interactivity in relation to narrative content. Working through conceptual frameworks, prototyping, project demo, production and postproduction, they develop one core interactive narrative project in a medium of their choosing, which may include an interactive website, game, projection, performance or soundscape. The work is developed through self-directed learning with guidance, supported by lectures, tutorials, class exercises, and peer and instructor feedback sessions.

This course provides a foundation for working specifically with interactive narratives, which can be applied in more advanced interactive projects such as the Final Year Project, and supports further study in interactive media, games, and emerging narrative practices.

Successful candidates will have a Master’s and/or Ph.D. in Interactive Media, Digital Media, Game Design, Media Arts, Film and Media Studies, Creative Writing for New Media, or a related field. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in relevantdisciplines and substantial industry experience in interactive narrative, games or digital storytelling may be considered in exceptional cases.
