Role OverviewÂ
R1 is seeking an SVP, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead enterprise-wide cybersecurity strategy, threat operations, and risk management.Â
The CISO will serve as the executive owner accountable for protecting R1’s systems, data, and client environments by ensuring resilience, regulatory compliance, and trusted operations at scale.Â
This leader will stabilize, modernize, and transform R1’s cybersecurity capabilities, while partnering closely with executive leadership, clients, and the Board to maintain confidence in the company’s security posture.Â
Key ResponsibilitiesÂ
Enterprise Cybersecurity LeadershipÂ
Define and execute a multi-year cybersecurity strategy aligned to R1’s business prioritiesÂ
Serve as the executive owner of cybersecurity risk and posture across the enterpriseÂ
Lead all aspects of security operations, including:Â
Threat detection and responseÂ
Vulnerability managementÂ
Identity and access managementÂ
Cloud and infrastructure securityÂ
Incident Management & Executive AccountabilityÂ
Own end-to-end incident response and crisis managementÂ
Lead executive decision-making, escalation, and communications during security eventsÂ
Interface with regulators, customers, and partners on security incidents as neededÂ
Governance, Risk, and ComplianceÂ
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and customer requirements (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST, PCI)Â
Maintain a robust cyber risk management frameworkÂ
Lead audit readiness, certifications, and ongoing assurance activitiesÂ
Operating Model & Organizational LeadershipÂ
Build and evolve a high-performing global security organizationÂ
Define clear roles across:Â
Internal teamsÂ
Offshore deliveryÂ
Third-party security providersÂ
Drive accountability, performance, and continuous improvement across the functionÂ
Security Architecture & TransformationÂ
Define the target-state security architecture and roadmapÂ
Lead modernization initiatives (e.g., zero trust, cloud security, identity strategy)Â
Oversee vendor strategy, tooling decisions, and security investmentsÂ
Financial Stewardship & EfficiencyÂ
Own the cybersecurity budget and investment strategyÂ
Optimize spend across personnel, tools, and vendorsÂ
Ensure strong ROI and alignment with enterprise risk prioritiesÂ
Customer & Board EngagementÂ
Serve as the senior security leader for customer-facing discussionsÂ
Partner with commercial and client teams to support growth and retentionÂ
Provide regular updates to executive leadership and the Board on cyber risk, posture, and investmentsÂ
Partner to CIO, Product, and Engineering LeadershipÂ
Work closely with Chief Information Officer (CIO), Product, Engineering, and Infrastructure leaders to:Â
Embed security into product and platform designÂ
Enable innovation while managing riskÂ
Support scalable, secure delivery modelsÂ
Key OutcomesÂ
Within the first 12–18 months, the CISO will be expected to:Â
Establish a clear, forward-looking cybersecurity strategy and roadmapÂ
Strengthen enterprise confidence in security posture across executives, customers, and regulatorsÂ
Deliver a right-sized, efficient operating model aligned to R1’s global delivery structureÂ
Modernize security capabilities and reduce enterprise risk exposureÂ
Build a durable foundation for long-term cybersecurity performance and governanceÂ
Experience & QualificationsÂ
15+ years of experience in cybersecurity leadership, including prior CISO or Deputy CISO/VP in a large enterprise organizationÂ
Proven track record leading enterprise-scale security organizations in complex, regulated industriesÂ
Deep expertise across:Â
Incident response and cyber operationsÂ
Cloud and infrastructure securityÂ
Risk management and regulatory complianceÂ
Experience engaging with:Â
Boards of DirectorsÂ
Executive leadership teamsÂ
Large enterprise clientsÂ
Leadership ProfileÂ
Strategic, enterprise thinker with strong execution disciplineÂ
Comfortable operating in transformational, complex environmentsÂ
Strong communicator with ability to translate technical risks into business impactÂ
Credible advisor to CEO, CIO, and Board on cyber risk and investment decisionsÂ
Collaborative leader who builds trust across IT, Product, and business teamsÂ
