Who They Are
Our client is one of the larger human services organizations in the region, serving a large population across multiple counties in New York. Their work spans intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) services — group homes, residential supports, day programs, and self-directed services — along with mental health and addiction services, including outpatient clinics and a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) designation. They also run mental health and substance use urgent care and crisis services (including a regional crisis call center and mobile crisis teams), PROS centers and community counseling, housing and employment supports, family and youth services, and care management through a Social Care Network. The organization also has several affiliated programs in the broader region.
Â
Why the Billing Side Is Uniquely Complex
Few organizations bill across a payer mix this varied. It spans OPWDD residential and day programs; OMH clinic, CCBHC, PROS, and urgent care services; crisis services; and Medicaid Managed Care, Medicare, and commercial plans, including behavioral health carve-outs. That's why billing experience beyond Medicaid Managed Care is such a priority for this hire.
Â
What They Care About Most
- Billing depth beyond Medicaid Managed Care — strong commercial and private insurance billing experience, especially with behavioral and mental health payer plans, plus Medicare, Medicaid, and Medicaid Managed Care for NYS behavioral health services
- Ideal background: someone from a similar agency offering both IDD services (group homes, day programs) and mental health services (especially clinics and urgent cares)
- Also acceptable: revenue cycle experience in a hospital setting
Â
The Job Itself
- Run the full revenue cycle: billing, payment posting, collections, and insurance verification and authorizations
- Manage a team of up to 8, including formal evaluations, coaching, mentoring, and cross-training
- Handle claims, denials, and appeals, and work payer-aging reports to reduce A/R and speed up cash flow
- Own the team's KPIs: total revenue, collection rate, days in A/R, and denial rate
- Take on some finance work: journal entries, audit support, and monthly/year-end receivables and income analysis
- Write billing and A/R policies and procedures, and produce weekly and monthly reports for leadership
- Stay hands-on enough to cover any position on the team when needed
Â
Must-Haves
- 5+ years in healthcare revenue cycle or medical billing, with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding knowledge
- 5+ years of progressive supervisory experience
- Experience with EHR systems and billing clearinghouses
- Strong Excel and database skills
- At least an associate's degree in accounting; a bachelor's in accounting preferred
