CBC News is looking for an innovative and versatile producer with a strong interest in world news and excellent field producing skills to join our new bureau in Beijing, China. 

At a time when the world, and Canada’s place within it, is rapidly changing, being present on the ground to bring stories Canadians want and need to know about is critical. As part of our expanding world coverage team, you’ll work closely with our correspondent in Beijing to help unpack Canada’s relationship with this global superpower. 

You’re someone who brings both strong editorial leadership and logistical expertise to the role. You understand the important role of a public service broadcaster in helping Canadians make sense of their world. You’re the person on the front-line upholding the 

upholding the CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity. 

The ideal candidate has knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region – its history, its diplomacy, its politics, its economy - and the confidence to help shape CBC’s editorial coverage. 

You’re an ideas generator, constantly pitching stories for our mobile and streaming audiences. 

You have experience producing social-first content, for Tik Tok, YouTube andCBC.ca. You can manage the production of a story, from focusing, researching, booking interviews, and vetting stories for visual, audio and text.

With support from the Senior Producer of World assignment, you help to create coverage roadmaps, budgets and travel when required. You provide off-camera logistics to the bureau daily, arranging for visas, translators and liaising with local officials. You create a culture of collaboration and support, ensuring the safety and well-being of the team is considered in every assignment.

You understand that stories can break at any time of the day and you have a genuine desire to be on-top of that coverage. The position requires a flexible schedule, including rotational shift work, weekends and overnights to cover breaking news; and a willingness to deploy on a moment’s notice, including to conflict zones. The minimum assignment length for this position is two years and, if agreed to by both parties, may be extended for up to an additional two years. 

What you’ll be doing: 

• Generate and execute compelling journalism, including pitching, researching, writing, shooting, generating and editing social, text, audio and visual content; experience shooting and editing video is an asset in this position.  

• Manage interview schedules, coordinate with other media outlets on pool coverage and ensure safety protocols are followed 

• Fact checking, verifying names, locations and translations against tight deadlines, ensuring all content adheres to theCBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices. You also bring experience verifying video and other user generated or third party content. 

• Produce original content, including the visual style, pace, tempo and format for live and on-demand content, including social video, live reporting and packaged items.

• Off-camera logistics, including arranging for visas, translators and liaising with local officials; coordinating with the World News assignment team and programs and platforms to ensure scripts, text items and audio and video content is fed back to Canada.

• Collaborate effectively across CBC News to ensure comprehensive coverage across multiple platforms, programs and locations, including building a solid relationship with Radio-Canada journalists also working in Beijing.  

What you bring: 

• You are a seasoned producer with at least five (5) years of directly related field experience at a network/national level and, preferably in a foreign environment. 

• You perform best in a deadline driven, high pressure environment, with an ability to balance the pressure of delivering content quickly against the needs for accuracy and balance

• Proven record of highly creative, innovative visual storytelling.

• Possesses a strong level of technical knowledge and understanding of live coverage, visual gathering, visual production and post-production methods and remote filing tools; video production, including shooting and editing, is an asset. 

• Has a strong understanding of the Asia-Pacific region and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience, with a commitment to seek out voices from underrepresented groups.

• Must have a strong sense of creativity, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.

• Strong communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills are required.  

• Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a professional attitude.

• Must possess a valid passport and have the ability and willingness to travel internationally on short notice. 

• Graduate from a University or Community college in a relevant course of study or equivalent industry experience. 

• Ability and willingness to work overtime and various shift patterns including overnights and weekends.

• Packaged daily news items that were posted on social platforms and broadcast on TV and radio platforms.
