About the Role 

Help make the University of Virginia’s digital content accessible toeveryone. As a Digital Accessibility GraduateLeadIntern you will lead one of two small teams of Digital Accessibility Undergraduate Interns for a new document remediation service for UVA staff.EachLeadsupervisesup to three undergraduatestudentinterns. TheLead is expected to delegate assignments, review output for accuracy and accessibility, and managetheprocesses of this service.In addition to team leadership responsibilities, the Lead will remediate advanced or complicated assignments.The position reports to the Digital Accessibility Coordinator.In this role,youwill learn to use industry-standard toolstoidentify and fix accessibility barriers in PDF documentsbygainingtheskills that are increasingly sought after in government, education, and technology sectors.

Position will start as soon as possible and last through the end of the academic year (May 7, 2027). 

 

WhatYou’ll Do: 

Program Development (approximately20% of effort) 

  • Assist in developing documentremediation program at scale for the Academic side of the University 
  • Assist with thecreation ofprocesses and development of standards of practice for undergraduate student interns. 
  • Assist with creation of accessibility checklists and guidelines for future interns to follow. 
  • Documentationprocess improvements  

 

ManageTeam (approximately55% of effort) 

  • Onboard undergraduate student interns. 
  • Overseeup to three undergraduatestudentinterns, includingdelegatingtasks, balancing flow, andtracking milestones. 
  • Review allinterns’ deliverables beforeproviding to requestor, checkingforthoroughness andconformity. 
  • Provideoral andwritten feedback to undergraduatestudent internsroutinely. 
  • Attend and lead weekly meetings with undergraduate student interns. 
  • Manage interns’ escalationsand questions aboutaccessibilityand/or complexcontent. 

 

Complex andAdvancedDocument Remediation (approximately25% of effort) 

  • Manage high-priority remediation requests and remediate escalatedand/or complicatedmaterialsbeyond the level of undergraduatestudent interns(e.g. charts, multi-column layouts, and tables). 
  • Utilize tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, Equidox,SensusAccess, and PAC. 
  • Remediate PDFs and digital documents to meet WCAG 2.2 AA and PDF/UA standards. 
  • Ensure proper reading order, tagging, headings, alt text, color contrast, and metadata. 
  • Liaise with subject matter experts forassistance with complex image descriptions, data sets, charts, graphs, etc.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

Education: CurrentUVA graduatestudent  

Licensure: None

WhatWe’re Looking For 

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new software. 
  • Good written communication skills. 
  • Interest in accessibilityor inclusive design (no prior experiencerequired). 

 

Training is provided. No prioraccessibility knowledgerequired. Allmajorswelcome.  

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE 

  • Prior supervisory experience. 
  • Prior experience with project management and related software such as Jira, Asana,Teams or others. 
  • Previouspracticewith PDF editing, document formatting, or accessibility remediation. 
  • Experiencewith Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word accessibility features, or HTML/document structure concepts. 
  • Understanding of document version control and best practices for shared file management 
  • Interest indigital accessibility and/ordisability studies. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Remote work is possible afteraninitial training period. 

 

WEEKLY HOURS 

Up to 10 hours/week during the semester 

Hourly Rate: $22/hour
