Credit Risk Analyst

Our Credit Risk team helps keep that money safe by identifying and mitigating merchant risk before it becomes financial loss while minimizing unnecessary friction for legitimate businesses. Commerce moves fast and risk patterns evolve quickly, so curiosity, sound judgment, speed, and accuracy matter.
As a Credit Risk Analyst, you'll conduct hands-on investigations, apply team playbooks and judgment, communicate clearly with merchants, and connect transaction patterns and business characteristics into a clear risk assessment. You'll use AI tools to sharpen your analysis, learn from experienced teammates, and steadily deepen your credit risk expertise.
Key Responsibilities
Review and investigate merchant accounts by analyzing business, transaction, fulfillment, and chargeback activity, then take appropriate action
Own the quality and outcomes of merchant investigations while continuously deepening your knowledge of emerging credit risk threats
Communicate directly with merchants to gather information, address concerns, and explain decisions
Monitor caseload trends and assess how business models, seasonal patterns, and economic conditions affect merchant risk
Surface merchant and risk insights to help cross-functional partners improve Shopify’s tools, processes, and detection rules
Apply team playbooks and improve them as you identify gaps or better ways of working
Use AI tools to detect threats faster and automate repetitive analysis
Share expertise and support teammates in producing consistently high-quality investigations
Qualifications
Experience within financial services in a risk analysis or underwriting role within a digital payments, e-commerce, or marketplace environment.
Strong knowledge of merchant credit risk and chargebacks, with the ability to connect multiple signals into a clear risk assessment
Sound judgment and ownership when working through ambiguity
Clear written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences
Curiosity about emerging risks, business models, and opportunities to improve your craft
Proficiency with MS Excel, Google Sheets or similar spreadsheet tools
A collaborative approach to sharing expertise and raising investigation quality across the team
Nice to have
Experience working in a fintech environment
Experience writing SQL or a genuine interest in pulling and analyzing your own data
Experience using AI tools to speed up analysis or automate workflows
Experience working with high-risk business models such as pre-sales, dropshipping, or subscriptions
