The Team & Opportunity
The Product Legal Team counsels the business units responsible for developing and building Shopify’s products and services. We provide legal support on new products across different verticals. Our work is challenging, varied, and constantly evolving.
Your work will span:
Global payment rails processing billions in transactions
Embedded asset accounts, loans, cards and other financial products that blur traditional regulatory boundaries
Emerging payment methods from BNPL to crypto
AI-powered lending and risk decisioning systems
About You
We're looking for a strategic, passionate, and product-forward senior product lawyer. You're energized by being embedded with product and engineering teams, getting into the details of how data actually flows, and turning that understanding into practical, business-propelling counsel.

Responsibilities
Ship products that don't have precedent: Partner with product teams launching financial innovations that regulators haven't contemplated yet
Navigate global complexity at scale: Manage regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions for products serving millions of merchants processing hundreds of billions in payments
Translate between worlds: Explain complex regulations to business stakeholders in their language and translate product visions into compliant realities
Build frameworks, not just answers: Create scalable legal frameworks that enable product velocity rather than one-off approvals
Own the outcome: Take accountability for go-to-market launches from legal review through post-launch iteration
Build positive and highly collaborative relationships across Legal Teams at Shopify
Qualifications
A qualifying law degree and license to practice law in the United States or Canada
7+ years of relevant legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
Substantial experience counseling Product teams on financial regulatory matters, privacy, consumer protection, and compliance
Exceptional analytical thinking, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills
Comfort with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment, collaborating across multiple areas to achieve common organizational objectives
Proven ability to manage external counsel across multiple jurisdictions
Bonus Experience
Experience with common fintech financial licenses (e.g. US money transmitter licenses and BitLicenses, EU/UK e-money institution licenses, and similar regimes worldwide)
You’ve launched financial products internationally
Background in emerging areas: embedded finance, open banking, crypto/blockchain
