Queen’s Knights Robotics Team (QKRT) 

We are a close-knit, interdisciplinary group of students dedicated to developing robots for the Advanced Robotics Competition. Our team provides an inclusive environment that enables students to collaborate and explore the latest technologies at the forefront of robotics. We are devoted to supporting each member, empowering them with both technical and interpersonal skills to excel in their future pursuits. Learn more at qkrt.ca. 

We are currently looking for Technical Team Members to join our 2026-27 team! You will be placed on one of the sub-teams listed below based on your interests. 

Requirements:

  • Applicants should have an interest in the design, fabrication, and programming of robots. 
  • Expected time commitment of 4 hours per week. 
  • An eagerness to learn and develop technical skills. 
  • Experience with programming and CAD will be considered an asset, but is not mandatory. 

Mechanical Design 

Responsibilities: 

  • 3D modelling of all our competition robots 
  • Decision-making for how our robots will function 
  • Procurement and selection of mechanical parts 

Members will gain experience in: 

  • Design and Manufacturing 
  • CAD Design and Modelling 
  • The Iterative Design Process 

Auto-Aim 

Responsibilities: 

  • Controlling the motion of the turret 
  • Programming autonomous controls for an aim and fire system 
  • Integrating Auto Aim with computer vision co-processing outputs 
  • Developing an Object Detection Algorithm 

Members will gain experience in: 

  • Programming in C++ 
  • PID Controls 
  • Perception and Projectile Motion 
  • Artificial Intelligence Models 

Auto-Nav 

Responsibilities: 

  • Implement autonomous navigation and path planning 
  • Integrate ROS2 packages for perception and localization 
  • Test and validate robots' autonomous driving capabilities 

Members will gain experience in: 

  • Programming using ROS2 
  • Localization Algorithms 
  • Navigation and Path Planning 

Embedded Systems 

Responsibilities: 

  • Developing robotic control systems  
  • Implementing omnidirectional navigation and gimbal control 
  • Embedded development with sensors and actuators 
  • Implementing robot firmware and system upgrades

Members will gain experience in: 

  • Programming in C++ 
  • Microcontrollers and Actuation 
  • Embedded Systems 

Electrical Team 

Responsibilities: 

  • Designing safe and easy-to-use power and signal connections. 
  • Development and testing of a Supercapacitor Module. (analogous to a rechargeable nitro boost for a car) 
  • Designing and implementing safety systems for higher-power circuits. 

Members will gain experience in: 

  • Circuit analysis and design with power electronics. 
  • PCB design using CAD. 
  • Circuit simulation software. 
  • Microcontroller programming and the UART data protocol.
