The Packing/Shipping Superintendent is responsible for directing the daily operations of the Packing and Shipping department to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely packing, staging, loading, and shipment of finished product. Under the direction of the Department Manager, this position provides leadership to department supervisors and team leads and is accountable for achieving department objectives related to safety, quality, productivity, customer service, logistics, cost control, and team development.

This position requires a strong understanding of manufacturing operations and logistics, including the planning and coordination of material pick-up and delivery activities. The Superintendent serves as a key point of coordination between internal departments, customers, suppliers, carriers, and drivers to ensure transportation activities are effectively planned and executed.

ResponsibilitiesandDuties

  • Ensure the team safely and efficiently packs, stages, loads, and ships finished product in accordance with Plant Quality Standards and customer requirements.
  • Direct, develop, and evaluate supervisors and team leads.
  • Manage hourly and salary work schedules.
  • Plan and coordinate pick-up and delivery of materials and finished product.
  • Coordinate transportation activities to support customer delivery requirements and operational needs.
  • Communicate shipping guidelines and requirements to carriers within the transportation network, including instructions, required documentation, facility closures, and other applicable information.
  • Maintain effective communication with customers regarding shipments, delivery requirements, scheduling, and transportation issues.
  • Coordinate relationships and communication between suppliers, customers, carriers, and drivers to ensure effective movement of material.
  • Monitor and minimize driver wait times through effective scheduling, communication, and coordination.
  • Optimize and synchronize transportation operations with production, packing, warehouse, customer, and carrier requirements.
  • Troubleshoot transportation, shipping, packing, and delivery issues and coordinate timely resolution.
  • Monitor transportation and logistics costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and improved efficiency.
  • Participate in transportation cost and rate negotiations with carriers and service providers.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of shipping documentation, reports, records, and other administrative requirements.
  • Drive compliance with Safety, Quality, and Environmental certifications, regulations, and company requirements within the assigned area.
  • Ensure proper utilization, allocation, and maintenance of department equipment.
  • Establish department objectives and translate business objectives into meaningful and achievable goals for the department.
  • Monitor department performance and implement initiatives to improve safety, quality, productivity, customer service, and cost performance.
  • Ensure effective coordination between Packing/Shipping and other departments to support overall plant operations.
  • Develop employees and support succession planning and talent development within the department.
  • Ensure all required data, reports, and documentation are completed accurately and timely.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments concurrently while maintaining focus on department priorities and business objectives.
  • Perform various administrative tasks associated with department operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree with 5+ years of progressive manufacturing experience; or
  • 7+ years of progressive manufacturing experience in lieu of an Associate’s Degree.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in a supervisory and/or leadership role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with logistics, transportation, shipping, or distribution operations.
  • Knowledge of transportation planning and coordination, including carrier, customer, supplier, and driver relationships.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and respond to operational issues in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in aluminum manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience leading Packing, Shipping, Logistics, Warehouse, or Distribution operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of transportation management, carrier relations, freight costs, and rate negotiations.
  • Familiarity with purchasing, receiving, inventory, and quality practices.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Self-directed with disciplined work habits and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, particularly Excel and other computer-related programs.
  • Strong mechanical and operational aptitude preferred.
