Operations - Cook (Casual)

Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving meals, including cooking, roasting, grilling, baking, testing for palatability, and carving. The Cook prepares and serves meals and snacks following established menus and recipes, modifying, and adjusting as required, and coordinating planning food preparation and cooking schedules. Duties include receiving supplies, performing inventory control duties, storing goods, and updating inventory records. The Cook also performs cleaning duties including the cleaning of food preparation equipment, utensils, the kitchen, and storage areas. As needed, the Cook provides directions to food service workers, clients, and volunteers.

Program Summary

We are looking for applicants able to work in the Vancouver area on one of the programs below:

Jubilee:

The Jubilee Rooms provides around 80 units of single room occupancy (SRO) housing to people that are long term residents of the Downtown Eastside community.  This is a supported housing program that is staffed by a combination of Tenant Support Workers, Indigenous Cultural Liaisons and a Peer specialist – all staff will oversee the front desk assisting with managing guests as well as providing community supports.  The building is a combination of two SRO’s – four stories each with no elevator, lots of stairs and shared bathrooms and showers on every floor.  The program includes one meal a day and a light breakfast.  The staff office is on the second floor with the safe use room right beside it.  Over the next year the main floor commercial space will be transformed into a community space for the tenants and staff along with a community kitchen in the back. There is no elevator at the Jubilee Rooms, staff need to be able to manage lots of stairs.  

Triage:

The Triage Centre provides emergency housing and care for people living with mental health, substance use and other challenges. There are 28 shelter rooms. Clients are able to stay longer than at most shelters, which gives shelter staff time to help them access appropriate support services based on their individual needs and circumstances. Referrals are accepted from individuals themselves, hospitals, community service providers, health-care practitioners, employment assistance workers and other local shelters.

Princess Rooms:

Princess Rooms was RainCity Housing’s first minimal barrier housing program in Vancouver for people facing systemic and individual barriers to adequate housing and health, personal and financial security. Princess Rooms came to life to address the unique safety and support needs of people who struggle with mental health in our community. The program offers a flexible, non-judgemental environment and follows a harm-reduction/health promotion philosophy.  For us, the term ‘Risk Reduction’ doesn’t only apply to drug use or safer sex. It can mean safer lives, creating safer spaces for people to live and thrive in. 

  
Qualifications

Many forms of education and experience are valued, including volunteering, and lived experience of mental health/substance use/homelessness. Minimum education and experience include:

• Grade 12
• Professional Cook Training Certificate
• Certificates in First Aid and Food Safe
• Recent, related experience of six months
• Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
