Operating as an integral member of the personal lines product services group and play a key part in our ongoing digital transformation. We are looking for people who are passionate about creating innovative solutions that enhance user experiences and business outcomes.

As a Product Owner, you will apply your organizational and analytical skills to help solve company challenges. You will be responsible for understanding the current state of system functionality and prioritizing our stakeholder needs including internal and external business partners, to achieve desired business outcomes. You will operate in an agile, collaborative environment that values your insight, encourages you to take on new responsibility, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation. Additionally, this role will be responsible for meeting regularly with our external partners, alongside other teammates, to obtain partner feedback and share details with those partners on our prioritized defect resolutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop product backlog, as well as user stories backlog for implementation
  • Monitor the progress of product development, as well as plan for product release
  • Contact customers and end users to obtain information on expected product features
  • Provide reports to update management and stakeholders on product development operations
  • Analyze customer opinions and feedback to determine features or components that will add good value to a product
  • Contributing member of the product services group, understanding key business objectives for their assigned line of business and providing support to product and underwriting leadership in meeting those objectives.
  • Facilitating communication between business stakeholders, external partners and our internal technical team.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Markel’s APIs and become proficient in API analysis with our external partners.
  • Provide functional design, clarifications, and other details on user stories to help the development teams build a quality product
  • Triage root cause of defects impeding application functionality
  • Help test software solutions as needed
  • Assist in the development of technical documentation and training materials
  • Consult with stakeholders, providing expertise on current system features and capabilities and informing approaches to achieve the desired business outcome

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience

Skill Sets:

  • Firm understanding of the relationships among API contracts, specification documents, and sample Request/Response payloads as well as ability to interpret, analyze for consistency/accuracy, and produce these artifacts.
  • Strong working knowledge of insurance underwriting systems a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify, resolve issues with minimal guidance
  • Strong verbal skills with a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical matters to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong organization and time management skills

Work Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Business Analyst in an insurance or insurance-related business
  • 2+ years’ experience working as a Product Owner
  • 2+ years’ experience working with APIs in a professional setting
  • Strong working knowledge of underwriting and/or insurance related systems
  • Experience working with business partners and vendors including their software developers to understand existing and define new API capabilities and integrations.
  • Markel offers a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in office and 2 days remote.
