- Currently serving in the U.S. military, with the ability to participate in the SkillBridge program.The DoD SkillBridge program is an opportunity for Service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects Service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences.Â
Purpose/Objective:
Connect highly qualified transitioning service members to an aviation maintenance internship where they can further develop their skills and gain valuable civilian experience prior to transitioning out of service. Â
Program Type:Â InternshipÂ
Program Timeline:Â 2-6 monthsÂ
Program TermsÂ
- The participating Service member receives full military pay and benefits while participating in the internship.Â
- The participating Service member must not work more than 40 hours in any work week. If a Service member participates in less than 20 hours per week, they shall return to work and not be on administrative leave status.Â
- The intern’s work should complement, rather than displace the work of paid employees while providing significant educational benefits to the intern. Â
- The intern and the employer understand that the internship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship. Â
- The Service member will work under the close supervision of the organization’s staff for the duration of the program. Â
Schedule:Monday – Friday 0700-1600, lunch 1200-1300 (not to exceed 40 hours/week)Â
Job Purpose:As aDoDSkillBridge Aviation Maintenance Intern, you willfurtherdevelop your aviation maintenance skills with the support of experienced A&P mechanics in a variety of areas to deliver quality and value to a diverse set of customers. Â
Responsibilities:Â
- Reads and interprets technical manuals and guidelines to learn basic principles of inspections, installations, repairs, or otheraircraft maintenance activitiesÂ
- Read,interpret and follow technical dataÂ
- Learn to diagnose mechanical or electrical problems
- Learn to repairaircraft systems anddetermines serviceability ofaircraft partsÂ
- Learn and understand how to inspect andmaintainaircraft, ensuring that work meets company and regulatory standardsÂ
- Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and correctiveaircraft maintenance
- Modifyaircraft structures, systems, or components, following drawings, schematics, charts, engineering orders, and technical publications
- Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment
- Assemble and install electrical, plumbing, mechanical, hydraulic, and structuralcomponents and accessories, using hand or power toolsÂ
Skills/Qualifications:Â
- Technicaland mechanicalaptitude; aviation maintenance strongly preferred
- High school educationor GED equivalent isrequired,some college preferredÂ
- Excellentcommunicationand organizationskills
- Coachability, desire to learn and apply training
- Must be a self-starter and highly motivated, able to work withminimalguidance
- Organized, able to adapt to changing priorities and fast-paced environment
- Ability to perform basic math calculationsÂ
- Must provide own toolsat completion of program(tool list to be provided)Â
- Ability to:
- Crawl in and out of tight spaces
- Comfortably work at elevated heights of at least 40 feet for extended periods of time
- Lift, balance and carry 50lbs.
- Work in enclosed hangars and exterior weather conditions
- Workin close proximity to other peopleÂ
