Railroad Field Operations Assistant Manager

Location: Candor, NC | Allentown, PA
Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Starting Salary: $100,000/year β€” higher salary available depending on experience
CDL: Not required

Position Summary

We are looking for an experiencedAssistant Manager to support field teams working on emergency railroad operations, derailment response, specialty lifting, railcar repairs, and track maintenance.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone comfortable working in fast-moving field environments, supporting Supervisors, coordinating crews, solving operational issues, and maintaining strong safety and customer service standards.

Key Duties

  • Support Supervisors with the planning and execution of multiple field projects.
  • Coordinate assignments, manpower, equipment, and project priorities.
  • Monitor job progress, schedules, costs, and customer requirements.
  • Provide hands-on direction and assistance during field operations and emergency calls.
  • Visit job sites regularly to evaluate safety, quality, productivity, and potential risks.
  • Work directly with railroad customers, field partners, and regulatory agencies.
  • Coach, train, and mentor employees while assisting with hiring and performance management.
  • Help with workforce planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Review payroll, labor hours, equipment usage, and project records for accuracy.
  • Monitor equipment condition and coordinate repairs, maintenance, or replacement when needed.
  • Assist with customer development, relationship management, and industry events.
  • Identify operational problems and implement practical solutions.
  • Ensure work complies withDOT, FRA, and company safety requirements.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience inrailroad, heavy equipment, construction, or related field operations preferred.
  • Previous experience leading or managing field teams.
  • Working knowledge ofDOT and FRA regulations.
  • Experience operating or working around heavy equipment such ascranes, trucks, and excavators.
  • Ability to understandcrane load charts and rigging requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to useMicrosoft Office and learn operational software.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Class A or Class B CDL preferred.
  • Ability to complete required safety training and certification programs.

Work Conditions

  • Frequent overnight travel.
  • On-call availability with the ability to report within1 hour when required.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Extended schedules, including weekends and holidays when operationally necessary.
  • Active field role requiring walking through railroad work areas and other demanding environments.
  • Ability to lift up to50 lbs.
