FAR.AI is a non-profit AI research institute working to ensure advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone. Our mission is to facilitate breakthrough AI safety research, advance global understanding of AI risks and solutions, and foster a coordinated global response.

Independent by design. We can pursue what's most impactful based on our theory of change and share what we find publicly.

A portfolio approach. Rather than focus on one single direction, we run diverse bets across the safety stack. We take promising ideas from initial experiments to deployment, informed by red-team partnerships with frontier labs and governments.

Serious infrastructure for ambitious research. A dedicated engineering team runs our compute cluster and experiment-scaling stack, so researchers spend their time on research instead of on infra.

Setting the standard. Our events convene key decision makers; our red-team works with frontier developers and governments; and our communications inform the public. Together, this drives adoption and sets the new standard in safety.

Since our founding in July 2022, we've grown to50+ staff, published40+ academic papers, and convened leadingAI safety events. Our work is recognized globally, with publications at premier venues such as NeurIPS, ICML including aBest Paper Honorable Mention in 2026, and ICLR, and features in theFinancial Times,Nature News,Wired Magazine andMIT Technology Review. We conduct pre-deployment testing on behalf of frontier developers such as OpenAI and independent evaluations for governmentsincluding the EU AI Office and publish theAI Security Leaderboard based on our red-teaming expertise. We help steer and grow the AI safety field throughdevelopingresearchroadmaps with renowned researchers such as Yoshua Bengio; runningFAR.Labs, an AI safety-focused co-working space in Berkeley housing 40+ members; and supporting the community throughtargeted grants to technical researchers.

FAR.AI is seeking an experienced writer and editor to lead development of our written content. You will report into our Communications Team Lead and work across the communications team to shape our narrative, content and messaging. You will work closely with our researchers to translate their research findings into actionable insights for policymakers and corporate decisionmakers across formats from op-eds, blog posts and research papers. We believe that AI will be the defining technology of the 21st century. These systems could bring with them unprecedented benefits, but they also pose unprecedented risks, up to human extinction. We already know that AI will fundamentally affect everyone’s lives, reshaping the nature of work and upending geopolitics. Yet few people outside of Silicon Valley appreciate what is about to happen. Key decisionmakers in governments and companies have a limited view on what is to come, while the general public are even more in the dark.

Communications atFAR.AI fills this urgent gap. As a research and education non-profit, we are a trusted, independent third-party that can cut through the hype, avoid fear mongering, while delivering credible warnings when a technology truly poses a danger. OurCommunications Team partners directly withFAR.AI researchers to translate our work into compelling narratives that connect with our target audiences, whether policymakers, corporate decisionmakers or the general public.

The team consists of experts in design, digital media, and media relations, ensuring our research and events reach their key audiences across various channels. Communications works with keyFAR.AI team members, including our CEO Adam Gleave, building and amplifying their public profiles and thought leadership. Communications is deeply embedded acrossFAR.AI, partnering cross-functionally to deliver strategic projects. The team develops and executes communication plans for our key initiatives, such as ourleaderboard on AI model security to enable consumers and policymakers to make informed decisions on their use and governance of this technology.

About the role

FAR.AI is seeking a Staff Writer & Editor to own development of our written content. You will work with our researchers and red-team on pre-publication findings to write reports read by key policymakers and decisionmakers at frontier labs; develop content for public-facing products such as oursecurity leaderboard; and work with our CEO and key technical leaders to writeop-eds and position papers that shape the field. You will craft a compelling org-wide narrative and ensureFAR.AI’s voice remains trusted and authoritative in the field. Key responsibilities

• (Technical version of role) Writing to the scientific community

  • Partner with our technical team early on in key research projects to identify the key narrative and message for their work.

  • Edit drafts of academic papers to more effectively convey their ideas to a scholarly audience, and structure the papers to submission standards (including working in LaTeX where needed).

  • Writing blog post summaries of papers, targeted at a technically knowledgeable (but not necessarily expert) audience (example).

  • Co-writing blog posts (example), newsletters (example) or position papers (example) with our technical team to convey key positions or ideas.

• Content Strategy & Execution

  • Translate our core research findings into actionable insights for key non-technical audiences, e.g. policy briefs.

  • Own written content onFAR.AI’s website, our primary brand surface. Collaborate with our Digital Media Manager to shape the structure and presentation so it clearly communicates who we are and what we stand for.

  • Own our quarterly newsletter, setting the editorial direction, consolidating key updates from across the team into a clear narrative for our key supporters.

• Voice, Narrative & Messaging

  • Work with our Communications Team Lead to establish and steward a consistent organizational voice, develop compelling narratives around our strategic priorities and key messages that support this narrative.

  • Equip staff across all teams with the messaging, framing, and confidence to represent and amplifyFAR.AI’s narrative in their own work and channels.

  • Collaborate with our Digital Media Manager to ensure that our social media posts are consistent with this voice and narrative, including reviewing key posts.

About You

You are a skilled writer who is passionate about clearly communicating complex technical findings in a way that is actionable to diverse audiences. You combine crafting a compelling high-level narrative with hands-on execution and thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You will be comfortable collaborating with key stakeholders across the organization to ensureFAR.AI’s messaging is always clear, persuasive, and credible. You will set the bar for clarity, accuracy, and rigor acrossFAR.AI's writing.

Proactive and self-directed, you can carry several projects at once and bring each one over the finish line. You move fluidly between the rigorous and the accessible, and you treat clarity as a craft. Collaborative and detail-oriented, you make the researchers you work with sound like the best version of themselves.

We welcome applications from both experienced writers, as well as technical specialist who are skilled and passionate communicators.

We expect writers to have:

• 3+ years of professional experience in a writing role (e.g., staff writer, science communicator, editorial lead).

• A portfolio of published work demonstrating their ability to turn complex technical material into clear, accurate writing (papers, technical reports, research blogs, or similar).

We expect technical specialists to have:

• 3+ years of experience in machine learning or a closely related field (e.g. maths, stats, physics) as a researcher or engineer (e.g. PhD in ML; Research Engineer).

• A portfolio of published writing across varying levels of complexity (two or more of: papers / technical documentation; blog posts; social media; op-eds; policy briefs).

We expect all candidates to have:

• Proven ability to own projects independently from concept to completion.

• An interest in AI safety and our mission, and a willingness to learn.

We expect strong candidates to havesome, but not all, of the following:

• Familiarity with the AI landscape and experience engaging with key stakeholders (governments, AI companies, policy think tanks).

• Strong working understanding of machine learning concepts, sufficient to represent research accurately and converse credibly with researchers.

• Experience with the academic publication process: arXiv, conference submissions, peer review, LaTeX.

• Track record of writing, ghostwriting and/or editing op-eds.

• Track record of writing to policymakers, e.g. policy briefs, especially in technology and innovation policy.

• Background in science journalism, research communications, or as a researcher who writes.

Logistics

• Hours and Location: This is a full-time, long-term position that can be either in-person (Berkeley, CA; or Singapore) or globally remote (with overlap with 9am-noon Pacific time). We offer visa sponsorship for in-person employees.

• Compensation: We can offer compensation of $100,000–$200,000/year depending on experience and location, with the potential for additional compensation for exceptional candidates, plus our standard benefits for US & Singapore employees which includes catered lunch and dinner at our offices in Berkeley.

• Contractual Relationship: If based in the US or Singapore, you will be an employee ofFAR.AI (501(c)(3) research non-profit / non-profit CLG). Outside the US or Singapore, you will be employed via an EOR organisation on behalf ofFAR.AI or as a contractor.
