Position Overview:The Senior Medical Coder – Production, Training & Quality is a highly experienced coding professional responsible for performing accurate, compliant production coding while serving as a key resource for new coder onboarding, training, auditing, and ongoing coaching. This role helps ensure coding quality, consistency, productivity, and compliance across the department.

The position serves as a subject matter expert and escalation resource for complex coding questions and works closely with Coding Leadership to identify coding trends, address performance gaps, strengthen documentation practices, and implement standardized coding processes. The Senior Coder will play a critical role in developing new coders from onboarding through independent production while maintaining their own production responsibilities.

This is a hands-on senior-level coding role focused on production excellence, coder development, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review patient records and accurately assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify information and ensure complete and accurate documentation for coding
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding standards, medical terminology, relevant regulatory requirements, and internal MVC policies
• Responsible for reviewing and updating MVC code set with off-cycle and annual ICD10/HCPCS/CPT updates
• Serve as a subject matter expert and day-to-day resource for production coders
• Serve as a primary coding resource for new coder onboarding and training
• Develop and deliver structured training related to coding workflows, specialty-specific coding requirements, documentation standards, payer requirements, and departmental processes
• Provide hands-on instruction and case-based education during the new coder training period
• Review new coder work and provide timely, constructive feedback to reinforce correct coding practices
• Monitor new coder progress and communicate training needs, performance concerns, and readiness for independent production
• Help identify recurring knowledge gaps and recommend additional education or training
• Support ongoing education for the coding team as coding guidelines, payer requirements, workflows, and organizational processes change
• Identify opportunities to improve coding workflows, standardization, productivity, and quality.
• Ensure all coding processes align with regulatory standards, including HIPAA, payer requirements, and company policies
• Perform additional duties and/or projects  as assigned by coding leadership to support the MVC coding team’s operations 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Advanced knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and healthcare CMS/payer specific documentation requirements
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in coding and documentation
• Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to efficiently navigate Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems
• Experience mentoring, training, onboarding, auditing, or providing quality feedback to other coders
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify coding discrepancies and documentation deficiencies
• Ability to work independently, unsupervised, and manage time appropriately 
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities

Required Certifications and Experience

• Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or equivalent certification required
• Minimum of four years of medical coding experience (multispecialty or vascular coding preferred)
• Successfully complete and pass a coding assessment 
• Previous experience with GE Centricity/Athena EMR preferred

Compensation varies based on certification level, years of coding experience, coding assessment results, and overall alignment with role expectations.
