Tactical Skills/Scenario Instructor – Part-Time (Public Safety Training Specialist 1)  

This recruitment is for multiple, limited duration, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE) and is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

What you will be doing:   
You will be working in DPSST’s Skills Training Section delivering pre-designed curriculum within the Scenario and Tactical Skills Program. This position will offer instruction to students in the following programs such as:

• Basic Police Program 

• Basic Corrections – Local Program 

• Basic Parole & Probation Program 

• Armed Parole & Probation Program 

• Liquor & Cannabis Inspector Program 

Successful applicants will demonstrate an ability to effectively coach and evaluate a student in the effective, legal, and legitimate tactics and techniques across several programs. Applicants may be placed for work within the Scenarios, Tactical Medicine, Building Search, and Active Threat Response Programs. DPSST expects instructors to maintain a safe and respectful training environment.

About DPSST:  

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. DPSST is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.

·         Instructors who live more than 75 miles from the Academy and teach more than one day per week will be reimbursed mileage for one round trip in addition to lodging and meal expenses. Exceptions may be authorized with prior supervisory approval.

Minimum Qualifications:  

Three (3) years of professional level experience related to scenario or tactical skills instruction and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

• Experience as instructor related to: Scenarios, Vehicle Stops, Building Search, Tactical Medicine, Active Threat. 

• Highly motivated individual with the ability to work independently and within a team environment. 

• Strong operational experience applying adult learning theory. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Preference may be given to candidates who currently hold or have previously held an intermediate law enforcement certificate within the last five (5) years, coupled with recent experience in the subject area. 

Preference will be given to current or former Field Training Officers (FTO/PTO) who have completed an FTO/PTO course.
