Position Overview
TheMedical Director - Clinical Affairsserves as a vital strategic clinical partner bridging Included Health, our strategic clients, and external stakeholders. This role is designed for a visionary physician-leader who can think of new and creative ways—leveraging data and technology—to improve the healthcare experience in a way that promotes better clinical and financial outcomes.
The ideal candidate will not only represent the value of Included Health’s clinical offerings to support growth and retention but will also act as an executive-level clinical advisor to our most complex clients. They will translate population health data into actionable clinical campaigns, clinically steer multi-vendor ecosystems (including TPAs and carriers), and collaborate with internal business strategy teams to scale repeatable clinical solutions in the market.
Key Responsibilities:
Pillar 1: Clinical Stewardship & Support for Strategic Clients
Executive Advisory: Serve as a trusted clinical thought leader for strategic enterprise clients, advising executive committees on topics such as clinical policy guardrails, healthcare AI integration, and benefits strategy.
Population Health Strategy & Analytics: Analyze population utilization data to develop strategies, rising-risk briefs, and clinical campaign designs that alter the cost and health trajectory of client populations.
High-Stakes Case Support: Manage the high-stakes, high-visibility, or high-dollar case desk—providing clinical case memos, peer-to-peer discussions, and member-facing clinical framing guidance.
Population Health Informatics & Efficiency: Review aggregate member health and claims data to uncover systemic inefficiencies and low-value care patterns, providing plan sponsors with clinical guidance on how to optimize their benefit ecosystem.Â
Joint Vendor Stewardship: Lead multi-vendor clinical rounds bringing together Included Health, client HR leaders, third-party administrators (TPAs), carriers, and other point-solutions to align on clinical action plans.
Clinically Led HCC Management: Direct the clinical narrative around High Cost Claimants (HCC) within client populations, moving HCC efforts from static reporting to active, clinically led member support.
Pillar 2: Growth Strategy & Support for Sales and External Partners
Sales & Retention Enablement: Partner with Sales and Client Success teams during high-stakes prospect pitches and renewal cycles to showcase the clinical and economic value of our programs, driving upsells, revenue generation, and customer retention.
External Representation: Represent Included Health at national conferences, industry events, and seminars to showcase our clinical performance, navigation, and virtual care capabilities.
Educational Engagement: Develop and deliver highly engaging educational materials and clinical presentations for clients, healthcare professionals, and public stakeholders.
Pillar 3: Internal Support & Business Strategy
Scalable Clinical Strategy: Partner directly with the Business Strategy team to evaluate external vendors, co-develop our clinical strategy, identify emerging market needs, and determine what clinical offerings can be delivered effectively at scale.
Qualifications:
Professional Background / Requirements
Education: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
Clinical Experience: Minimum of 5 years of post-residency clinical experience. High-quality clinical baseline across a wide range of medical conditions is highly preferred to support high-stakes case navigation.
Licensure: Active medical license in good standing in state of residence. Must maintain board certification in primary specialty throughout employment.
Travel: Willingness to travel up to twice per month for 1-2 days each (averaged over the year) for client engagements and conferences, occasionally with short notice.
Specialized Expertise (Highly Preferred)
Clinical Consulting & Strategy: Proven experience in clinical consulting through experience such as corporate/health plan Medical Director, clinical SME in the digital health field, or through work in healthcare consulting.
Health Plan & TPA Acumen: Deep working knowledge of Health Plans, TPAs, and commercial benefit ecosystems, with direct experience in Alternative Plan Design (APD) or health plan client support.
Population Health and Claims Acumen: Experience analyzing healthcare claims, utilization reports, or clinical data to pull out population trends, track clinical quality, and identify opportunities to improve healthcare spend.
Digital Health Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of the digital health landscape, emerging clinical technology trends (including AI in care), and virtual care delivery models.
Core Competencies:
Commercial Mindset: Ability to balance clinical excellence with business scalability, understanding how to transition high-touch clinical concepts into standardized, repeatable, and value-driven offerings.
Elite Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex clinical data, policies, or cases into clear, compelling narratives for non-clinical corporate executives.
Relationship Management & Influence: Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with the ability to influence internal peers (Sales, Product, Finance, Marketing, Strategy) and manage delicate multi-vendor dynamics.
