Senior Tax Processing Specialist

Job Description:

Summary

• Prepare 750+ sales and use tax returns monthly for level 3-4 clients, applying comprehensive compliance knowledge and independent professional judgment to resolve complex tax reporting issues accurately and on time.
• Routinely implement new clients, including onboarding and establishing tax data files in various formats; review and reconcile client tax data, investigate discrepancies, and take corrective action.
• Foster strong client relationships through regular communication, proactively suggest process improvements, and resolve complex compliance issues; track and resolve notices from taxing jurisdictions with proper documentation and timely follow-through.
• Lead or actively participate in 1-3 MSO special teams, championing innovation and driving process improvement; assist with the development and documentation of internal processes and procedures.
• Serve as a formal mentor to 4+ junior staff members; develop training materials and lead peer coaching sessions to support team development and knowledge transfer.
• Utilize Microsoft 365, Excel, and Vertex Indirect Tax Returns (VITR) to create or enhance efficiencies and automation tools; serve as a recognized Innovation Champion within the function.
• Accommodate additional work hours during peak monthly processing periods, typically the 5th through the 20th of each month.

Required Qualifications

• 8-12 years of related experience in tax processing, accounting, or a related business discipline.
• Comprehensive knowledge of complex tax compliance issues for level 3-4 clients, with specialized expertise in two or more compliance areas.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 365, and Vertex Indirect Tax Returns (VITR); demonstrated ability to leverage technology to create or enhance process efficiencies and automation tools.
• Proven experience servicing large, complex client accounts and independently resolving complex compliance issues with sound professional judgment.
• Prior mentoring or formal leadership experience required; demonstrated ability to develop training materials and effectively coach junior staff members.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong attention to detail with the ability to manage time, priorities, and competing deadlines effectively.
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or a related field; IPT Sales Tax School (Course I and II) or equivalent certification required; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading cross-functional process improvement or special project teams in a tax processing or compliance environment.
• Exposure to automation technologies such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA) or Alteryx for workflow enhancement.
• Experience initiating and managing electronic filings and payments across multiple taxing jurisdictions.
• Experience developing or maintaining internal standard operating procedures and compliance process documentation.
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience accepted in lieu of a formal degree.
