Part-Time Lecturer in DS1101 Transversal Studio: Sense and Interaction

The School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified candidates to apply as Part-time Lecturer for DS1101 Transversal Studio: Sense and Interaction.

The Part-time Lecturer is expected to teach an undergraduate course commencing in January of 2027.

Transversal Studio: Sense and Interaction is an introductory studio course that introduces students to the fundamental principles of interaction design. The course examines how materials, environments, and technologies connect to create meaningful experiences. Students learn how input, process, and output operate together to form interactive systems across art, media, and product design contexts. Through hands-on exercises and guided studio projects, students explore sensing, systems thinking, and creative technologies while experimenting with form, movement, and feedback. The course encourages curiosity, play, iteration, and critical reflection, supporting students in testing and refining ideas to understand how design shapes behaviour and experience. Students are introduced to key tools and platforms such as Arduino and sensors, TouchDesigner, and introductory Python programming for interactive prototyping. These tools support data visualisation, interaction design, and the prototyping of responsive objects and environments. Emphasis is placed on moving from observation and research to prototyping and presentation, developing both technical competence and critical awareness.

This course forms a foundation for the Transversal Design: Object and Interaction specialisation and prepares students for further study in creative technology, product and experience design, and emerging media practices.

Successful candidates will have a Master’s and/or Ph.D. in Interaction Design, Creative Technologies, Media Arts, Product Design, Design Engineering, Digital Media, or a related field. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in relevantdisciplines and substantial industry experience in interactive systems or creative technology may be considered in exceptional cases.
