Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for aBattery Energy Storage System Operator I or II to join our Planning, Engineering, and Construction team. What does aBattery Energy Storage System Operator I or II do for us?
With direct supervision, ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Company’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets by remotely monitoring, controlling, and coordinating system operations under normal and emergency conditions. Performs real-time operation of BESS facilities through centralized control systems, coordinating charging and discharging activities with Load Serving Operations (LSO) and other internal stakeholders.
This individual responds to alarms, abnormal system conditions, and events; takes appropriate corrective action to protect personnel, equipment, and system reliability; and coordinates field response by BESS technicians and contracted resources as needed. They exercise sound judgment in time-sensitive operating conditions that may have significant operational, financial, and system reliability impacts. They will participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to unplanned outages and emergency conditions outside normal working hours.
They support continuous improvement of BESS operations by maintaining accurate operating records, supporting procedure execution and updates, and coordinating outage and maintenance activities. Additionally, they may periodically work in or coordinate with CIP-designated control room environments and are expected to understand applicable reliability and security requirements sufficient to support compliant operations.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
- BESS components and controls (BMS/EMS/SCADA), PCS/inverters, HVAC, fire detection/suppression
- Substation fundamentals
- Work management systems
- Microsoft 365
- Utility safety practices
- Basic networking/cyber hygiene
Preferred:
- Asset Suite, data historians (PI), SCADA principles, Utility Operations
Skills in:
- Preparing technical reports
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Facilitating cross-functional work
Ability to:
- Coordinate multiple priorities under time pressure
- Work independently and as part of high-performance teams
- Maintain data/records for compliance
- Travel and support field work safely
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Operator I:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
Preferred:
- AAS in electronics, electrical technology or bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related field
Experience:
- 2 years of operations experience in a power/industrial setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred:
- 2 years or more experience at IPC in a directly related area
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
Preferred:
- Vendor BESS certifications
Operator II:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
Preferred:
- AAS in electronics, electrical technology or bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related field
Experience:
- 5 years of operations experience in a power/industrial setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Preferred:
- 2 years of experience with BESS, power production, or substations operational experience
- Direct experience with utility-scale BESS operations/commissioning
- Experience administering LTSAs and Asset Suite
- Experience leading root cause analysis and corrective action plans
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
Preferred:
- Vendor BESS certifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position.
